what is this thing growing in my cactus pot?

Harrison, NY

Is this dangerous? What could it be? it started sprouting about 3 days ago.
it's a white/pale yellow growth coming out of the soil not the cactus.

my cactus appears to be growning normally,
should I worry?

there is also some fuzzy green stuff on some of the soil in the front of the pot

Yep .... you've got mushrooms! I get these growing in some of my potted plants sometimes too. I guess the spores must be in the soil. I wouldn't recommend eating these, I don't think they are the edible kind! They don't do any harm to the plants. I had some cute little yellow/orange ones about a month ago and I dug them up and planted them in their own little pot and they died. :( Guess they didn't like their new home.

Yeah this morning it opened up into a little mushroom

I guess I will leave it if its not harmful
I just dont want my birds to get at it

What kind of birds? Pet birds or wild ones? Birds are usually pretty smart and won't eat something that is harmful to them. I don't know if those mushrooms would be of the poisonious variety but I don't think the birds will attempt to eat them.

They are pets. I will try to keep it away from them regardless.

If you have mushrooms growing in your soil, then it points to wood shavings or wood in the compost decomposing, these grow from spores and some are harmless, others are very toxic, the reason they wont grow from being repoted is because the spores are held withing the cap (the top ball shape) when this ripens, it will send out new spores and will grow somewhere else where it lands, if I were you and you have pet birds or any kids around, I would pull the mushrooms from the soil, a gentle wiggle/tug, will normalyy bring the ball and the stem away from the soil, burn or get rid off the growth, it may regrow, do the same, always wash your hands after touching mushrooms if you are unsure if they are toxic, they can be very poisonous, so be warned, Good luck.
