Fungus?

Lafayette, LA

I need cactus help. I bought this cactus 2 days ago and now it's looking odd. Is it fungus or possibly lack of sun.

There are also two weird indentioned areas that odd.

I've seen that on cactus before. I think it's too much water, but I'm not an expert. Maybe someone else can give you a more authoritative answer.

Indentations? Do you mean at the base where it's sticking out of the soil? If so, I think that is where it was taken off the mother plant.

No, I mean more towards the right on the second picture. It's like white spottish things.

I honestly don't think that's anything to worry about. I just know I've killed off more cactii by overwatering than underwatering. When you go to water it, if the soil still feels damp down about two or three inches into the pot, don't water at least until it's dry. My daughter has a number of cactii that were in individual pots and I put them in groups in two larger pots. I only water them when I can't remember the last time I did, which is about every two or three weeks.

I think the trouble with your Cacti is either over watering and the base of the plant (root) has got too wet and cold from the soil being soaked, or further up you have an attack of a little mite that is eating some sap from the juicy part, it looks like a puncture mark that has healed over, I would remove the plant and place it in a mixture of compost and sand, or buy some cacti compost, if you only bough the plant a couple of days ago, either take it back as no plant should go like that so soon after buying it, or try cut off the damaged bit at the bottom, leave the good part of the leaf to dry, say over night, then re-pot it into the mixture I gave earlier, don't water it for a day or so, then to water, mist the leaf, then sit the pot on a bowl of water so it takes water from the base, once the top of the soil changes colour, usually goes darker, then remove the plant pot, let it drain all the water from the soil and place the plant into a warm but lightly shaded area till it roots again, don't sit it on a window where it will fry in the direct sun, they need real good light, but not baking sun till they are well matured, only water again when the top of the soil is bone dry or you will rot the bottom of the leaf again, hope this helps you out a bit, Good luck, WeeNel.
