nearly everyday Dave comes up with something new

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

It happened again today!! Wow, Dave, you are a busy man! You formatted the home page differently so there's fewer tabs on top. You done good! Please, tell me you have time to rest too. I'd send you some fresh squeezed lemonade, but it would be a mess by the time it got there... he he he...

Thanks for all your hard work!

Harper

Thank you! :-)

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

You're welcome, are you taking your break?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I love it too- great job Dave!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm liking it!

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Boy, was that disconcerting! I'm certainly glad I've been following these changes through the DG forum! I'll bet you'll be getting a lot of emails today about what happened.

It's going to take some getting used to, but I think I like it too. One change I'd like if it would be at all possible - could there be a dropdown menu for each of the tabs? That way we can just hover over the tab and then select from the dropdown menu. Also, I think it would diminish the number of questions about "Where did everything go?" that I'll bet you'll get.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I like it also. I didn't even know I had a Blog! HAHAHAHA I didn't like the way the journals worked when I started here last year, so I started a diary instead. Adding a new entry just got so much easier for me. I haven't been as diligent about adding things this year, but now I hope to make more time to record without cutting into the visiting time. I do love to visit! HAHAHAHA

Thanks Dave for your hard work. You really are looking out for us!

Love that little pixie Janet.

Thanks Harper. Me too. He's one of my most recent garden treasure additions.

I like the new tabs at the top with the drop downs.

How do I get the new Communities Box that is appearing out of my pages? It's sort of squishing everything over to the right.

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Equil - I had the same problem, and found it squishy, too. Here's what I did...

Second row of text - click "My Info".
End of the box for "Your Actions", click "Manage Your Preferences"
Last choice is a drop down for "Navigation" - select "On the right side of the site".

That'll "squish" everything to the left for text, and puts that window to the right of the screen.

hope this helps,
Jennifer

I like trying new ideas. I do think it is squishing everything to the right and now I'm not able to scroll sideways from the bottom bar. Do you think theres anything that could be done about that? I wouldn't mind it if I could scroll to the right.

Marlton, NJ

LOL, darn I knew I should have hit preview first before posting!

Hmm. I must the the only one who doesn't like the new format. I thought the old format was much cleaner.

Marlton, NJ

Well thats much better; Thanks Angel!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

This one has a more squished look. When I go to my forum favorite, that's all I wish to see. It looks more cluttered, but then maybe I just need some time to adjust to it.
Dave, I really do appreciate all your hard work.

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9a)

perfect and easy to change it to the right.....great!, thanks Angelsong!

This message was edited Aug 13, 2007 9:49 AM

I appreciate all the hard work too, but I liked the old way better. This one seems more cluttered. I have to scroll all the way to the right to be able to read a complete post. More steps to get to some places like the Plant Files.

It's going to take some time to get used to this new format.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I like it!!!

I just had to switch the navigation thingy over to the right...the blank space on the left under the box wasn't easy on the eyes.
Ummm...much better...Thanks Jen!

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

I'm not crazy about it either. How about a drop that shows when we run mouse across main listing. That would be easy to see what is behind each tab?(Did that make sense?)

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

oh no just since this morning my tabs have changed. the only weird thing to follow is the text is now way to the right for these forums. that will take a lot of getting used to. bon jovi said it best, "i hate change but i like progress."

As a suggestion, could we have the items on the box as a drop down feature from the main tab instead of having the box appear on the page at all times? I hope this makes sense. I think others are suggesting something similar

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

jnana,

that's what i'd prefer myself. it's very distracting.

Yeah, I found that too. My brain gets distracted too easily at this stage in my life LOL

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

jnana, I like that suggestion too.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

:)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

I like it!

I, too, moved the "navigation" box over to the right side of the page. It really cleaned things up great. I can now see the poster's info, the post itself w/out scrolling, and can still see the navigation choices (Blogs, journals, etc).

And for some reason (maybe it is just me?) the site seems to be streamlined and faster to get around on, too.

Good job, dave!

I agree re the drop-down menu idea. It took me until now to realize there was a connection between the box, and which "tab" I had chosen.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

The choice is obviously Dave's but personally, I don't care for the pull-down style menus. I like it on the left, but as Angelsong pointed out, you can move it to the right-hand side if that works better.

Maybe it's just me, but I find sites with pull-down menus to be pretty sketchy to use - any sudden movement of the mouse and the links are gone, and/or I've accidentally clicked on something underneath them....and on several of those (unnamed) sites, more often than not, I've unwittingly launched an ad when I do that :-(

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I rather like the simplified home page, but I don't like the "communities" box in the upper left of each Forum's page because it pushes too much text too far to the right.
Ann

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

If they're done right they're easy to use. The biggest problem is being in too much of a hurry to move from one tab to another. One should be able to place the mouse on a tab, have another menu drop down, and easily select what one wants. Sometimes I think the problem arises when the initial tabs are too small because then there are too many of them on the page. That won't be a problem here.

Viola ann and others - Follow AngelSong's directions in the post above to move the box from the left side to the right. Here's her post: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3851966

Gosh, I hate to be the fly in the ointment, but I am not fond of this change. More clicks to move about, and I don't like the box on the left that moves everything to the right, with a blank space down the left. Having a real problem with that item. I'm sure there is good along with the bad, but I don't think this is an improvement. Sorry.....

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

It isn't all threads that get squished over but moving the box to the right hand side is a good enough compromise for me. Heck- you can't choose that preference on eBay auctions when sellers have their eBay store inventory on the left distracting you from what you were really trying to see. :)

Oh! And Dave? About those hovering drop downs- could you just jump on that Web 2.0 app real fast?

......and don't touch my red stapler!

;-P

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Dave, maybe you can make that "Communities" box narrower so we don't have to move it to the right side? Otherwise, I like the new "cleaned up" look!

Edit: LOL, Daisy!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

question...

Can we change what appears within the 'communities' box?

I would like to have PlantFiles, BugFiles and GWD there along with the Member list. I never use some of those other things that are there now.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I know I just a grain of alst in this giant salshekr of a community, but I preffered the other style. It a pain having to scroll back and forth acros s the bottom to get to the forum threads.

I much preffered the other style. Especially when looking for communities was alot easier just to hit the garden tab and have only garden forum communities come up instead of everything under the sun.

With time sometime s being limite d to get on. It taking much longer to navaigate and go from this link to that link, scroll to the left, scroll to the right.

I am all for change that make s life easier, especially when it comes to navigating on the computer, this just doing it for me, sorry Dave!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I like that idea Mel. Like a one-click navigation tool to all of our favorite hangouts.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Thank-you Angelsong for the directions, and for the other who reposted them for us. I did just that, moving the Community box at left to the right. But now I don't see it....seems like my homepage is same as usual, which is fine by me.

Thank-you for allowing so many preference options on here Dave!!!!

Edited to say, oh yes, there is is....on the right of the screen only when you are IN a thread.

I like it, once I moved the communities box to the right I can't really tell a difference.........smooth navigating too.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Okay, how do you move it to the right ?
