He just kinda hangs out on the butterfly bush leaf, doesn't bother anyone, but looks a bit odd. Sorry the picture is a bit blurry.

It's a Robber Fly, probably the same genus as this one, Diogmites:

They eat other insects, so, not a garden pest

These are so weird! They are one of the few insects in my garden that I really don't like! They have actually followed me and just sat and stared at me. Here's one that really freaked me out because I found him watching me thru the window! eeekkk!!

One got in the house last month and we learned that they play dead when threatened! My dh was swinging a towel around trying to get it. He found it on it's side then it jumped up and fly off. I found it laying on the counter and caught it in a bug hut and it jumped up and started flying again!
