This is my first attempt at growing potato's. I started the first weekend in May with the seeds of yukon & red potato and put them at the bottom of a whiskey barrel with about 5" of soil. Every few weeks I covered them with additional peet & soil as they grew taller and eventually reached the top of the barrel. I have had a couple of rounds with flea beetles, and have treated them twice with a recommended remedy from the local nursery. We have also had extremely warm temps and low humidity here this year with 42 days over 90 and counting.
As the leaves seem to be getting yellow & brown and the stems are loosing their green color, I am curious if it is time to harvest or if I have made some kind of a blunder.
Any advice is appreciated.
Potato... Time to harvest or???
Normally I lift my potato's when the foliage starts to die down, however they have normally flowered by then, also over hear in UK, there has been a lot of potato wilt, which also causes the foliage to go yellow and wilt, the potato's are unfit to eat as they go all black and slimy, but on saying all that, this disease has been caused by too much rain and humidity, if I were you, I would very carefully scrape away some soil and find a few potato's in the barrel to examine them, if nice firm tubers are there, then I would say empty the barrel as I would not want to take any chances with your crop incase of disease, they look more ready than deceased to me, but by finding a few now, you will know for sure, good luck, hope you have a great crop. WeeNel.
it is time to harvest potatoes when foilage dies down. Leaving them in the ground a couple weeks beyond that time helps them store longer by the skin that thickens. One may harvest potatoes while blooming for New Potatoes.
