I applaud the dedication to "blu", but there comes a time when the "good of the community" takes over. Let us say that "blu" won and go on from there.
Yes, it was a fun thread with lots of laughter and brain teasers, but - I'm on dial-up with no choice to up grade and if "blu" is slowing the system down then it does impact my ability to get things going.
Now, if it is just a matter of the one thread slow loading, then let 'er rip. I quit trying to read it a *long* time ago and, quite frankly, lost interest because of the redundance that I was seeing, but that is just me, not anyone else. I'm sure there was a lot of interesting and fun stuff going on and it would be great for anyone dedicated to that thread. Thats fine if it stands alone without impacting the rest of the site. Being on slo-mo I tend to notice anything that causes overall problems that effect my load time.
With the recent changes Dave has made I've had some slow down, but it has all cleared out now.
So I have to ask -
Dave / Terry / whoever - does a long thread like "blu" effect the whole system or just the load time for the "blu" thread? If it only hits "blu" then why remove it? Anyone who really wants to stay with it understands that it will be slow loading. If it really *does* impact the entire system - then, sorry "blu", I'm for the shorter time to load.
We need an APB for Blu!

Quoting:
does a long thread like "blu" effect the whole system
It does.
Think of the DG servers as a butler, who stands there waiting for you to give him a request.
Loading a thread actually gives the butler hundreds of requests (each poster has their location shown under their name, for example, and so for each poster the "butler" is asked for their location) and so on and so forth. This is multiplied the longer the thread is.
Now, the server can basically do things only one at a time, so if other requests come in while it's busy handling something else, it puts them into a queue where it handles each item as it comes in, in the order in which it arrived. All this appears instantaneous, but when the queue gets long enough, it starts to be noticable as you wait for the "butler" to get to your turn in line.
So, long threads, when they are accessed a lot, can impact the whole site...

Love ya "blu", but its time to call it a day - You definitely have won and its time to retire and enjoy the royalties from Ripley's Longest Thread. You done good!
