I have two tomato plants in one x-large container 30" in diameter, I also have one plant in another 30" pot. All plants are now about 7.5' tall, very healthy looking. The plants are one 'Early Girl', a 'Beefstake', and one 'Whopper Tomato'. The tomatoes are forming and are currently green. About 35% of the fruit on all of the plants have black spots only on the bottom of the fruit. I thought it was the result of the fruit resting on the cage or the wooden stake; that's not the case. As the tomato ripens the black spot grows larger across the surface and deeper - looking more like rot. Is there a tomato expert out there that can tell me what my problem is? Do you think it is something as simple as over-watering? Thanks for your help.

Spots on Tomatoes
It's most likely blossom end rot--does it look like the pictures on this site?

Once it's happened there's not much you can do, but the fact sheet I linked to gives you some ideas of how to avoid it next year.
