ideas of what might be causing these

brown spots on this geranium?
The same thing happened to some baneberry I planted nearby - I thought that maybe something was wrong with the banebery, but now I know it must be the soil.
If I move these do you think they will survive, or is the plant doomed?

Are you watering in the evening or splashing water on the leaves when you water the plant? It looks like fungus, often ones that look like that are caused by fungus in the soil getting splashed up onto the leaves, then especially if you water in the evening the leaves will stay wet for a long time and give the fungus lots of time to grow. Even if you water in the morning this can sometimes happen, but you reduce the chances. I'd try watering really carefully for a while, making sure not to splash anything back up onto the leaves, and see if that stops the problem from getting worse.

This could be Bacterial leaf spot/blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv. pelargonii) or Alternaria leaf spot (Alternaris tenuis). They both cause spotting of the leaves and leaf drop Pick off and toss all leaves with spots. Avoid getting water on the leaves, water in the morning. Don't crowd plants, they need air circulation - especially in warm, humid weather. Spraying with copper fungicides can help too.
