My friend has these growing in her backyard. They are a brown cane like shell, almost hollow looking. They snap right in two. In June and July a flower shoots up through the middle of the cane first with yellow then orange flowers.
Unusual Flower, what is it?
Any chance you have a picture of the flowers?
I don't have a picture of the bloom, I wish she'd told me about it then. I was hoping the wooden cane like outsides would be enough for someone to recognize. If not, I'll post again next May
Thanks
What do the leaves look like? And can you describe the flowers a little better? Like how big are they, is it a spike of multiple flowers or is it just one, are the flowers daisy shaped, lily shaped, etc. Based on the stem alone I'd be surprised if someone recognized it (although there are some people around here who are pretty good at ID'ing things with very little info!), but if you can give us a good description someone may recognize it.
That kinda looks like a daylily flower stalk. There's TONS of different colored ones...
After they bloom, they leave behind a dried up stalk...
I am sorry I didn't get a more detailed description first. I have one now. The foliage is the fern like leaves. Long, pointy and invasive. In each plant about 10 of these wooden cane looking things shoot up. Out of those are a spiked shaped flower, much like a liatris but not fuzzy. The top part of the spiked flower is always orange and the bottom of it is always yellow. Or vice versa. The hummingbirds suck at it constantly, and when they do, they pull the color out of the spike flower. Hope that helps more
Red Hot Poker?
That's what it sounds like to me too, Latin name is Kniphofia.
Thanks teresainca, that's exactly what it is. I told my friends you guys would be able to figure it out without a picture of the bloom. Thanks all
the dried up cane looking things are the stems from last year if they are brown, the new flower stalks should be green with the flowerheads on the top, your friend should remove the dead flower hallow stalks at the end of the flowering season as the hallow stems can harbour all sorts of insects like earwigs, snails etc, the plant will soon send up new growth next spring.
