Should I sow my vegetable seeds in pots in my screen porch (gets a little sun throughout the day) and then transplant to the garden outside? I would do this mainly to keep squirrels and other critters from stealing the baby plants. Or should I just sow directly into the outside garden to avoid the risky transplant?
Sowing
Depends, some plants do well as transplants and some don't.
Thanks, Farmerdill.
Is there a website that explains all this or lists which plants are better/worse for transplanting?
It would be a lot easier to decide what you want to grow. Then look up up specific cultural instructions for that plant. In general, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, eggplants, peppers , tomatoes are transplanted. Most everything else is best direct sown. Root veggies are most difficult to transplant ( carrots, beets, turnips, etc.)
