Hi! I've been reading about this but am still confused. I have two vines (grown in Earthboxes) with several large Sweet Dumpling squash hanging from them, and the leaves are brown and the stems are dessicated. The skins are pretty hard--I can just barely press my fingernail into the skin. Is early August too early to pick them? And do I need to let them "season" for a while in storage?
Thanks!
When to harvest my Sweet Dumpling winter squash?
They will taste better if you let the cure for a couple of weeks. As they lose water they become sweeter. If the vines are dead and the skin is hard you should be able to pick them. If the vines are alive and growing I would not be in any hurry, unless you are just anxious to try them.
Thank you, Farmerdill. I think I understand!! I appreciate your help!
