Pls ID this horror!!

Billerica, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi all,
Just yesterday, I discovered this horrific sight on my euonymus. The plant is completely covered in it. Can you please tell me what it is and how to battle it? I don't know if it's a pest, fungus or disease.
Thanks so much.
LoraB.

Looks like aphids to me. Try blasting them off with water.

Hmmm - after the second picture - maybe not aphids.

That is scale (an insect), and very hard to get rid of when it is that bad. Euonymus is notorious for it. You can try spraying religiously with horticultural oil.

Here is a good web site:

And another with picture.

If you see any little black lady beetles with two red spots on their wings, don't spray. They are fantastic at cleaning up scale.

I think it might be too far gone for oil to work. Should I just dig it up and toss it?
Does scale "jump" from one plant to the next? I have some Stella's (dl's) just next to it.
Thanks again.

This is Euonymus scale. It doesn't attack daylilies. If it was mine, I would toss it. Try to put it in a garbage bag and seal it. And I wouldn't get anymore Euonymus plants. You'll just get scale again.

I don't grow Euonymus so I've never dealt with that particular sort of scale, but I've had luck removing some types of scale with a strong blast of water from the hose. Keep up on that for a few days, and spray with the oil after you've removed most of them with the hose, and you may be able to get them under control. I've never tried it with an infestation that heavy, but it might be worth trying if you don't want to give up on it. But ceejaytown is right, it'll keep coming back so even if you save it this time, it'll be a neverending battle.
