Propagation pictures & such

I am so happy to see my propagation efforts showing such success and wanted to share it with everyone. :o) These are some random pictures I've shot recently.

First, (I realize this isn't propagation, but I'm excited about it nonetheless) everyone knows how much trouble I have getting AVs to bloom, so I am thrilled to see 'Lucky Ladybug' blooming so beautifully for me. Someone was looking for red semi-minis, but I can't remember who. This is a lovely one, I think.

Gail sent me a bunch of AV leaves a while back and they're all putting up babies now.

Wow Amy lucky you. I love the baby streps

Good growing! Those are just gorgeous! :-)

Thanks Susan! I love them, too. This was my first real attempt at growing Streps from leaf, so I'm very excited about how well they've done. :o)

These are Thumbelina in the back right, Ruby at front right, and Bristol's Petticoat at left.

Thank you critter! They sure are cuties, aren't they?

Propagation bags full of seeds and cuttings... Lovely, aren't they? LOL It's become an obsession to take cuttings from everything I possibly can, and sow as many seeds as I can get my hands on. *Someone* on this forum started that...didn't they, Ki?? ;o)

OK, Rain...................................i cannot believe how quickly the av leaves and strep leaves are growing..............much faster than mine........................look at the Aiko leaf..............I don't even have babies from the mothers yet.
Congratulations.................
I am going to copy every single step you have taken as i would be so excited to have such results so quickly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome Amy.You are becoming quite the pro the way it looks. You have the gift for sure.Everything looks wonderful : ))

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

i could just sit here and drool over your pictures of such success, but I have to go back to work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Wonderful growing, Raingazer. You have such a nice collection of plants. Thanks for posting all your great results with propagation. You're right, it is so much fun.

Thank you all! :o) It's pure luck more than anything. LOL I'm learning so much along the way, though.

This is Sinningia 'Little Venus' and Kohleria 'Gunsmoke'. The bloom of 'Little Venus' is absolutely amazing and I can hardly wait til it's big enough to bloom! LOL I'm loving the dark foliage color of 'Gunsmoke' too.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Sinningia 'Tinkerbells' The colors are weird because of the lighting, but I can't seem to capture this one with the correct colors no matter what I do. I've left those two dying blossoms, hoping I was able to pollinate it. Now watch someone come along and tell me 'Tinkerbells' is sterile... LOL I love this one because it has so many flowers all at once.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Sinningia 'Ruffled Wood Nymph' This is the one that lived at the post office for 18 days. It has evidently forgotten about that....

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Mexican Pinguicula It had reverted to green, but I moved it closer to the lights and it's pink again! :o)

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Sinningia pusilla - You can see that the foliage to the left is dying back. You can't see the new growth that's already coming in beneath it. I need to cut it back, but want the young foliage to get a bit bigger first. The bloom and buds are coming from that small amount of foliage to the right. This plant absolutely amazes me! :o)

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Codonanthe species on the left, Variegated Lipstick on the right, both sent to me as cuttings, and Rob's Tippy Toes in the back, which has grown so much since I got it! :o)

i had no earthly idea you grew this many kinds of plants................what a collection, Rain.......they look so good......

LOL Gail! I've hardly scratched the surface! I've got lots more pictures to post, but my son is sick today, so I took pity on him and let him have the computer that has my pictures on it. I'm on the older one now. I don't think I can get my pictures onto this computer, but I'll try. I love sharing pictures. :o) On occasion, I sneak in a non-Gessie (such as the Ping). LOL I consider them to be companion plants! :oP

Your potting soil looks like a good mix Amy what do you use?

Susan, it's 2 parts potting mix, 2 parts perlite, 1 part vermiculite. From the recent discussions I've seen, that may be a bit much on the vermiculite, but it seems to work well for me, so I've continued using that recipe. I've also stopped using Miracle-Gro mix and am using something else. Let me go see what the name is...Garden Magic. It's 80% Reed Sedge Peat, Sand, and Perlite (no percentages given on the sand and perlite). I like it better than MG and it doesn't have fertilizer in it. Yay! LOL

Beautiful Amy!!! You've done a great job!

Did you start that Ping from seed, or by another method? I think I drooled over that plant once before when Keyring posted a photo of it...

Amy, How wonderful your plants are! You sure do an Awesome job of propagating and growing! Beautiful pic's .... I am really liking the Sinningia's! Love the S. 'Tinkerbells' and 'Ruffled Wood Nymph' too. My all time favorite has to be the little S 'pusilla' you gave me! I really thought it had died and now it's growing and blooming and sooo cute!

Wow! That Mexican Ping plant is really something! I love the coloration on that one, is it hard to grow?

I just love your set-up ... I think this fall and winter I want to try growing some Gessie's from seeds. I just need to get organized and set up an area for seed trays. Hubby asked me what I wanted for our 38th anniversary this Thursday and I told him a subscription to the Gessie society ... so he's gonna give me a 3yr subscription! Yipee!

Just got back from the post office........................thanks, Amy and i am sooooooooooooo excited that sweet SnowRose surprised me with the seed i am dying for ..............how did she know (LOL)
Now that I have made the mistakes with this first batch................i can hardly wait to try these new ones.................
BUT...........I must update you on the first batch of strep seedlings from her............i won't have as many as most but more than I can be thankful for.....................strain your eyes again and see how they are growing (with the green algae)...............

Amy, you are making me feel so inadequate when it comes to seeds, but i will get better and better with everyone's advice..............how delightful your pictures are..............give the bad computer to your son(LOL) so we can see more and more!!!!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes Amy... post more pictures!

Lin... did you take a picture of your sister's sunroom??? I'm dying to see it!!!

(Zone 1)

Va_Wild_Rose: Yep .... I did take a pic! I couldn't remember what thread and who asked me to take one. Here you go .... she has only a couple of plants because she is sooo busy with her life that she just doesn't have time for them ... she's never home! I would love to have a room like this ... it would be full. At holiday time my Sis puts a huge floor to ceiling Christmas tree right in the middle of the windows and when the tree is lit at night the reflection in the glass part of the ceiling and the windows is really spectacular! This isn't the greatest photo, and doesn't really show how large the room is but you can get an idea anyway:

what a beautiful room full of glass...................I love the open feeling but i can't even imagine air conditioning that much space with all glass.....................would sure like to try!!!!! (LOL)

Karen, Ki sent me that Ping when it was just a little thing. Here's a picture the day it arrived, just after I potted it up.

hehe...Gail, your picture reminded me of my Mom...she's always calling me over to see her new seedlings and I have to break the news to her that it's just a piece of green perlite....think she might need new glasses?

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Rain you sure have a lot of nice starter plants. I have been having some fun starting a couple of things. It is fun isn't it? I can't start a lot of things because I have no room for more.

And here's a picture I just took of it. I cropped it so you can see the pot it is in so you can see how much it's grown. Ki sent it to me about 2 months ago, I think. I didn't have it as close to the lights for a while, and it had reverted to completely green. I raised it up, so it's closer to the lights and the beautiful pink returned. :o)

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Lin, the Sinningias are some of my favorites, too! They have such big flowers for their size, and so many at once. :o) The S. pusilla will continue to get larger and will self-seed, so you'll have a whole pot full before long.

I've not had any trouble with the Ping, but I've done just what Ki told me to do. LOL It looks a little dehydrated to me now, though, and I'm wondering if I should water it a bit more often, but won't do that til I talk to Ki about it. ;o)

You don't need that much room to propagate, Lin. They can hang off the side of the stand, or just anywhere you have a spare speck of space, the seed cups will fit. Ki taught me that. LOL

I love your sister's sunroom, too! Wish I had one! ;o) I love this time of day. The sun shines through the blinds onto my plants, and this is when I really wish I had a sunroom like hers.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Gail, don't feel inadequate! You're doing fine! Those Strep seedlings will be tall and gorgeous before you know it! Gently jostle the roots with a toothpick and lightly fertilize them. They love that! :o)

makshi, I'd love to see pictures of what you've been working on! I'm so excited about all these. My family couldn't care less, so I always start out by saying, "I know you don't care, but I'm gonna show you anyway..." LOL My husband is tickled for me, but the kids just kinda grunt an "mmhmm" at me. LOL And like I told Lin, you don't need much room for seed cups - at the edge of a window sill or anywhere. :o)

Here's the Petrocosmea momo that everyone, including me, thought was going to die. Not so! LOL It used to be smaller than a quarter. http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3444600 I don't know that you can tell it from the picture, but the leaves are all sort of lumped up because of all the bloom stalks underneath them. They won't poke up from under the leaves. This is my first Pet. to bloom, so I don't know if that's the way they always do or not. Anyone else know if this is normal?

Amy: You have a regular nursery there ... I would love to have just one large plant stand where I could grow seeds - of course then I would be looking for a place for all those plants once they matured cause I know I would want to start more seeds! LOL. My husband asked me yesterday if I thought it was too much work with all the plants I have now! :) I laughed at that! I told him that there's no way I could have so many plants if I had a job ... it would be too time consuming taking care of so many plants! While I was gone for 8 days he watered some things out on the deck for me and the plants on my front porch and some in the Florida room ..... I got home Sunday night and spent a good part of yesterday watering! It's so hot and dry here ... no rain in sight.

Oh .... I am loving that "Ping" plant!

(Zone 1)

Oh, I can't wait to see a photo of your Petro when the blooms show! I need to go look at the one I got as a freebie from my last Rob's order! Can't even remember what the name is ....
