Room for puppy - need 2 move Plantain Lily & move LOTV

Winnipeg, Canada

Hello all. This is my first post.

I am enjoying my first summer in my house and I'm making some changes to my small back yard. Also, I just adopted a puppy and I am trying to make a 'business corner'. My yard is very small and my grass is suffering just after 2.5 weeks.

I have almost completed the alteration. I have a Plantain Lily (would need two people to move it) and the problem is I realize I need to do this during the wrong time of the year.

Many times I have read over the years that spring is the best time, however I really would like to move it now or later in the fall when gardening season winds down here. Will I definately kill it?

Also, there was a large border of LOTV (Lily of the Valley) and the previous owners fought with it every year. I know how crazy this plant can be. Does anyone have any tips on getting rid of a mass take over? The LOTV is in the puppy zone and I read that it can make dogs tummy's upset if eaten. Of course I'd watch him, but he's a hyper puppy!

I will keep searching for answers, but some words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Blueberry, I consider myself a new gardener, so I can't offer a lot of tips, but I just made a thread recently about moving a large hosta this time of year (it's in the hosta forum of this board). Mine was big, but probably not nearly as big as yours if you'll need two people to do it. Anyway, the advice was that it was ok to do with mine, but keep it very well watered, which I have been doing...so far it seems fine- fingers crossed! I also happen to have a ton of LOTV that the previous owner planted and we got to talking about that in my other thread, too. I have removed a lot of it by digging, but someone made the suggestion to use Round Up on the unwanted parts in the future. I will be curious, too, to see what other tips you may get here, because that plant is hard to dig out!

When my dogs were younger, I made sure they kept away from the LOTV by using that inexpensive green wire garden edge/ fencing. Not sure what size pup your guy is, or if that is an option while you're working on getting rid of the LOTV. There are a lot of lists online for toxic plants to pets and LOTV seems to make every one of them, so it's better to be safe than sorry. Welcome to the board!
