Need a small plant, shrub, or tree to put in pool/lanai area

Saint James City, FL

I live in zone 10b. I have a 4' wide planter on the lanai that gets sun, but the sun intensity is reduced by the pool cage screening. I am looking for something pretty to plant there that would not grow more than 9' high. A pigmy date palm was suggested, but the planter is on the back side of the pool and I don't want kids getting stabbed by the spines. It also needs to be something that doesn't drop leaves/flowers into the pool...

Houston, TX

I have a rubber plant that has rooted into the ground via the drainage hole in the bottom of the clay pot. It loves the partial sun/ and shade. Although it has grown beyond 9', once I pruned it back it just gets bushier and prettier. No flowers butleaves do drop. But seldom and because of the large size they are easy to police. They are tropicals and should look attractive near a pool.Since you have a 4' wide planter, It should have plenty of root space.
