Pride of Madera

Fountain Valley, CA

I planted a pride of madera around 40 days ago. I line in California near the beach and it's planted in full sun. It was looking great until the last week and now it's very wilted and does't look like it's doing very well. Any ideas?

Planting in the summer is very stressful for plants, it is very tricky to give them the right amount of water (not too much, not too little) with the sun beating down on them. Their roots aren't established yet, so they have a hard time taking up enough water to keep the plant from wilting even if there's plenty of water in the soil. First thing I would do is check the soil --stick your finger down a couple inches, if it still feels wet then you've been watering too much and you should hold off on giving it any more, but if it feels dry then give it a good drink. Keep checking the soil like that regularly and eventually you'll get a feel for the right amount of water. If you have the water right and it's still wilting, the best thing to do is see if you can rig up some shade to protect it from the sun for a while until it's better established. The other thing you could do is dig it back up and put in a container until fall which is a much better time for planting things.
