I'm new to Dave's garden. Joined for the information, and was hoping to find some suggestions on hardy bog gardens for southeast Nebraska. What I'm really wanting is to find some pitcher plants and other carvierous plants that would survive our weather. Also tropical looking plants, again hardy for zone 5. thanks!
need help with bog gardening in SE NE.
Welcome to DG, 7oaks! If you do an advanced search in Plant Files, it gives these as hardy to Zone 5a: http://davesgarden.com/pf/advanced.php?nn%5B16%5D=11&nn%5B1%5D=0&nn%5B2%5D=0&nn%5B3%5D=8&nn%5B4%5D=0&nn%5B5%5D=0&nn%5B6%5D=0&nn%5B7%5D=0&nn%5B8%5D=0&nn%5B9%5D=0&nn%5B23%5D=0&nn%5B10%5D=0&nn%5B12%5D=0&sname=Plants&Search.x=43&Search.y=12
I'm right in there with you in that I have a bog area and am going to start doing something with it, but probably not for a couple of years. In the meantime, I've been hanging out trying to learn something at the Water Gardens forum. There is also a forum for Carnivorous Plants where someone could help.
Thanks McGlory, I need to simply take the time to research DG site. My plans are to have bog 'pockets' in my garden. I have some rubber roofing scraps that I want to make the pockets with, make some cuts in them for drainage. My hopes are by doing this, I can have more of a variety, and easy access to everything. I do tend to have big thoughts and want to push the limit, oh well...
Hi 7oaks. I too have grand thoughts. Before we bought our house, my husband suggested a japanese garden for the back yard, including a bog section. When we found the house we wanted we discovered it had the perfect place for one as it already collected water but didn't stay too wet. We have plans of having a dry streambed leading from the house to the back of the yard to be occassionally watered by rainfall. Three years later, nothing. My grand scheme in my head includes the Emperors Pavillion! So, we think big dreams and sometimes they come true. They just take longer than we think.
Good luck! Kwanjin
