Cutting back carnations

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I have looked on line and can't seem to find any info on cutting back carnations. The bottom of the plants are brown and need to be cut off but there are alot of blooms still on the plant. Any advice?

Hi Weegy, can you get back to us on what kind of Carnations you are growing as there are a lot, some people call Carnations and they are another type from the same family, the things I call Carnations have greyish green foliage, thin like some grass, and the flowers are round/flat and some smell of cloves, if this is the type you have and they are Perennial ones, then the foliage does go a bit bare at the base, you need to deadhead the flowers to keep them continually flowering, and if mine go a bit bare at the base, you have either washed away the soil as you water, scraped too much away as you hoe or weed, or the plants have climbed up from the soil in search of water or light early on, so try adding a mix of soil and compost under the foliage to promote greening up of the lower foliage, OR it could just be the case that the plants are old, outgrown there use and getting too weak, if you feel they have got too old, but carnations can grow in the same spot for years, you can add some fresh compost to the inside if the whole clump forming shrub/plant and they will root into new plants to then be cut from the parent, or take some stem cuttings in the fall and root them under shelter too plant out next year, these are easy to take cuttings from and are usually at flowering size by the summer off the next year. hope this helps, Weenel.
