Morning Glories 2007 # 15

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Emma. It is dark. Ron asked me to put it in plant files under chiaki so now I'm really confused! LOL
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3745955

I purchased it as 'Chiaki' 2 years ago, but we all know that doesn't always matter.

If it's wrong and there is an entry for 'Youjiro Mai Sugata' I will have it moved...

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Ronnie,
Bet he just hit the wrong button or something by mistake and didn't mean to give you that link. All of these names start running together at times *-*
It does look like Mai Sugata to me.

Emma

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Emma - The very dark blue youjiro would clearly be Mai Sugata and the medium blue Chiaki but what about intermediate shades that could result from either of these 2 crossing(?!?)...the particular phase in the life cycle of the plant can also affect the color...
This one looks closer to a chiaki to me...

HollyAnnS - I'm still tending to think that you have a rare pink Ipomoea hederacea there but I'd really like to see some closeups of the sepals to be absolutely sure...

The sepals are the small 'leaflike' structures enclosing the flowerbuds, surrounding the outside lower flowerbase and the seedpods...

Here is what the sepals of Ipomoea hederacea look like

luvsgrtdanes - If your plant is mostly consistently producing blooms that really look as dark as what is in this photo here

it looks more like the Mai Sugata in the PlantFiles here

Great blooms...

Thanks Ron, I will have it moved when I can. Funny thing is my "Chiaki" was purchased originally from Onalee...

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Here's another one to be sure!!

Ronnie - Beautiful blooms! I am growing a Rosita MG for the first time currently. Can't wait to see them IRL. Enjoy your time away lounging at the beach! :-)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Everyone has such beautiful blooms!

Joseph - this one is very nice! http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3818135 Is it one that will produce seeds, do you think?

For me, I've had a fairly productive morning:

Ron,
Thanks for that information.

Ronnie and Beckie . . .
I believe we are going to find out FOR A FACT that the cultivar 'Rosita' that I shared seeds with and that are also available to purchase on a few websites as 'Rosita' . . .
DOES NOT EXIST -
But "IS" instead . . .

Great blooms

This is interesting as it also comes from many Blue Tie Dye Seeds

Syrumani - I love the pastel colors and patterns of this one:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3819621

I grew a Raiko vine, which bloomed once or twice and then died. It was lovely while it lasted. Don't know if the intense heat killed it or what.

Emma - Interesting info about the Rosita!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Emma - I have seen similiar pictures to that one posted by others. All I know is that the seeds I started came out of a seed packet from Japan. I've got 3 vines going, and I've gotten others that looked more tie-dyeish . . .

Thumbnail by Syrumani
Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I wonder if the amount of rain we've had in the last month can affect the colors?

beckygardener - I started 3 vines, and only 2 survived all the rain. It has started to get hot here, now that the rain is over . . . for now, anyway. I did notice that there are a half dozen or so seed pods in the works. It's hard to stay outside for very long . . . the mosquitoes are everywhere!

I've got other vines (not MG - *gasp*!) - that are not doing well in the heat, and are drying up already.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Syrumani - Oh! I hear ya about the mosquitoes! I have a moat surrounding my yard. Not really .... it's actually some vacant lots surrounding my property that have turned into a large swamp area and are a nasty breeding ground for mosquitoes! They are so thick outside at times that I can't stand it even with bug spray on. Ugh! We've had lots of rain recently, too. But the Raiko was growing before the rainy season started. All my other MGs survived in the heat to produce more flowers, vines, and seeds, but the Raiko expired after about 4 weeks and two lovely blooms. Oh well .... didn't like my climate I guess.

What are your other vines? I, too, grow quite a few other vines that - fortunately - are doing very well and are huge. (Passiflora (Maypop), White Hyacinth and Purple Hyacinth vines, Coral vine, Crossvine, Coral Honeysuckle and white honeysuckle, Mexican Flame vine, Spanish Flag, Pipevine, along with the Moonvine (I thought the rodent had chewed all my Moonvines, but one has survived so far!). I also have a Campsis radicans contained in a large pot. (Not letting that bully get loose!)

Oh yeah .... I recently got some seedlings of Autumn Clematis which seems to be growing rather quickly in the pot! :-)

I know y'all will ban me now from this forum for being a traitor and growing those "other" vines! LOL!

Beckygardener - I've got 2 different gourd vines going, and a crossvine. It's the gourds that are frying. The crossvine has been doing well for 2 years . . . but I think my neighbor has accidentally cut a branch or two while he was weed-whacking last week. Some of the branches are turning yellowish.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Syrumani - Sorry to hear about your Gourd vines. I don't know anything about them. I hope your neighbor doesn't totally destroy your Crossvine. Mine has been blooming a lot with all the rain we've had. I garden for butterflies and hummingbirds, so that is why I have such a variety of vines as well as other non-vining plants. The MG vines do get my attention FIRST every morning! They are out there screaming at me with those amazing colors ..... "Look, look at me!" Who could ignore them? lol I have quickly become a fan of MGs! :-)

Here is my contribution for the day.

#20, velvet blue form.

Thumbnail by

#20, pale blue variant, I think on the same vine.

Thumbnail by

#22, the vine was really covered with flowers today.

Thumbnail by

#7 flowered today, nice pure white with less red speckling. Maybe more specks will be forthcoming.

Thumbnail by

Hewittia malabarica flower. The Japanese Beetle has taken a liking to it, and the I. obscura, but leaving the JMGs along; how odd is that? LOL

Thumbnail by

Kohkan JMG. The vine is sadly loaded with mites in spite of biological control efforts, but it keeps cranking out the flowers. I have seen lacewing eggs so maybe the Cavalry is on the way!

Thumbnail by

Mount Fuji Pink.

Nice blooms, Gerris2! I also love the foliage on the #7 white w/red speckling blooms. That's really a eye-catching vine that you have there! :-)

Thanks, beckg!

Here is one I bought from Komeri/MJG...Shikanoko. Somehow the blue snuck in there but it is nice. Shikanoko has variegated leaves and the unknown blue is unvariegated.

Syrumani . . .
Thanks for that information.
I have also seen other photos as well. Also I have had that bloom grow for me on the same vine as other Tie Dyes. Blues and Purples.
The Blue Tie Dyes that I grew came from a seed pack that I purchased from Parks that seeds originated in Japan. That is why I am wondering if these could possibly be one in the same. Interestiing!
Also the JMG Hamaginga also looks similar.

Joseph. . .
Your blooms here are 'off the chart' Awesome!

Your Hewittia malabarica is SPECTACULAR

Hi everyone!

Whoa!! Everybody has some great things going. Can't begin to isolate my favorite! They are all great..and the thread is full of info nuggets! Haven't had a chance to catch up on the other threads yet...soon!

I've been preoccupied with a heavy out of town work schedule and now will be changing responsibilities within the company...but still lots of travel.

My MG garden is winding down. Most of the large flowered varieties are history, but the more basic flowering lines and my mutation plants continue to put on a show. My spare time is spent collecting and logging seed....

I'll try to do a better job of keeping up with the show...

Arlan

here are the seeds I yet have to process...

Arlan, It is great to see you here and say hello today. I`m about to go away for a while with projects under way. Let`s keep each other posted! Karen

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Arlan - I just have to say your seed collecting method far surpasses anything I have come up with! lol Too funny! And right next to your laptop no less! I love it! :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Moonflowers are Morning Glories right? Or are they Evening Glories? =:-D

Either way .... are they the "largest" flowers of all? Is there any other type of MG that they can be crossed with?

Thumbnail by beckygardener
Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

becky - what a lovely bloom! really nice.

Joanne

Thanks, Emma!

Becky, nice Moonflower there!

Arlan, I am happy you are ok and all is well with you. I think of you every time I water #3, the JMG you traded to me.

Ronnie, some great blooms there. Love the Mt Fuji that looks like a red
or a violet color. The Jap m glory, white with purple striping and the
bright blue with the white throat. Take us with you please, lol.

Joseph, # 20 is mouthwatering in bright blue with splashes and like
the light blue right below on the same vine. The white with red speckling is beautiful, very showy, I love it.

Syrumani, love the Matsukazi

Becky, very nice moonvine.

Arlan, glad you're back.
