Hi, I have a question about watering in new sod. We have just laid down a huge area of sod yesterday. We get conflicting reports (even from the people who laid it down as to when we should be watering. One person said morning, the other said night the other said just don't let it dry out so water anytime when it needs it. I have heard that watering grass during hot weather "burns" the grass. As you can see I need help .. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Watering in New Sod ..Help!!
maureene, we laid over 800 yards of sod last summer. I feel your pain! We watered any time of day out of necessity, but I've always understood it's best to water in the morning so the blades dry out (but the roots don't). This prevents diseases that can set up in wet grass. It's also important to water less often (1 or 2x a week) but deeply rather than more often (daily). What you want is the water to soak into the soil and encourage deep roots. If the roots don't get well established and grow deep enough your sod will be more likely to burn up in the heat or freeze in cold weather.
I'd recommend Googling sod care or lawn care and see what the 'experts' say. What did we do before Google? LOL! Good luck!

Always keep it wet!
This is the watering schedule I used but I live in Arizona. You can see my results in the post "Sod install over existing lawn"
