Need Advice on Mandevillas (Help)

Tracy, CA

Two weeks ago I planted Mandevillas - Alice Du Ponts in my backyard. Half of the plants seem to be doing well, growing quickly and looking good, but a number of them are getting more and more brown leaves and seem to not be doing so well.

I am brand new to gardening. Am I overwatering or possibly underwatering these plants?

I am located in Tracy, CA in the Central Valley and would appreciate any feedback anyone could offer.

The middle of summer is a bad time of year to plant things, particularly in a place where you have hot summer temperatures. They're suffering from transplant shock--best thing to do is make sure they're getting enough water (but not too much--stick your finger a couple inches down in the soil and if it still feels wet then don't water, but if it feels dry then give them a good drink). And if you can rig up some shade to protect them from the sun until they get a bit better established that will help too. The problem with newly planted things is their roots aren't well enough established to take up all the water that the plant needs, especially when the hot sun's beating down on it all day. Unless you've been underwatering them, just adding more water won't help the situation (and could make it worse if the roots end up constantly sitting in water), what you need to do is remove some of the heat/sun stress by giving them some shade to give them their best chance. If you can't do that, then you may lose some of them. Fall and spring are much better times to plant things, that way they have time for their roots to get better established before they have to deal with the heat of summer.
