Chicken manure question....

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

I've had chickens for over a year now, and they have graciously been contributing to my manure pile.
Can anyone tell me how long dry (chicken manure) has to set before it can be used in the garden? …..I've heard it's good for the garden, but I don't want to burn my plants.

Thanks for the help!

Be careful with that because it can be very "hot"......I have seen farmers side dress with fresh stuff ...they would make a little indentation and put it in there-say a about a cup full at about 8 inches away from the vegi that they are wanting to feed...ie pumpkin vine or zucchini....but in the flower garden ...I would not.If things are heavily mulched I think you can use some from the bottom of the pile and sprinkle it around lightly (keeping well away from the stems of things. If it were me it would go into the compost
in between the layers of straw stuff.....and wait until it was about 6/8 weeks in there in the warm weather.Or leave all Winter if it is cooler weather.

Wear a mask when spreading chicken manure...several diseases are spread through spores in it....histoplasmosis for one. Any dust that is inhaled is potentially harmful.

Yikes! Now you tell me.....but seriously thanks for that -we are told to wear masks when handling any bagged garden stuff even potting mix...because of something called legionaires disease...I know it is very naughty but I just hold my breath and wash well.Sorry I forgot to mention that. :)
