What is this powdery brown stuff??

San Francisco, CA

Can anyone help me identify what this is on my snapdragon? It is a spotty, brown substance on the undersides of the leaves of my snapdragon. When you touch it, it is a pwdery substance, I suspect they are spores of some sort. I sent a picture and hopefully that helps. I have other stuff out there and I really do not want this to spread-whatever it is. It seems that the problem is getting worse and now the top sides of the leaves are starting to yellow slightly. Thanks for any input!

I have never seen that before but if you have any fungicide I would spray tops and bottoms of leaves immediatly!!

Looks like fungus. I tend to go overboard, but before spraying, I would cut off all infected foliage, then drench in fungicide. Spraying first can cause the spores to spread and make the problem harder to control. Unlike insecticide, fungacide works better as a preventative, so by removing as much of the problem as you can first, you'll get better results.

Thanks for tips, i'll try out your suggestions!

Looks like rust to me. We get it on our daylilies. Be careful when cutting the foliage off as you can pass it on to any other plants you touch that may be susceptible (SP?). Be sure to wear gloves and or wash your hands.

Lowes sells a very strong fungicide. It is potent. Be sure to read all of the instructions and follow carefully. Preferably not used when children are around. It is Ortho Garden Disease Control. It says it stop and prevents over 130 diseases!!! It sure helped ours.

We have a sprayer that can be plugged in to charge the battery. It lasts for a long time. It has helped with the daylilies. Ours is controllable at present.

HI There,
Well I figured out what this is and I figure someone out there can benefit from my info. This is a fungus that is unique to snapdragons. It often will come in the soil with the snapdragon when you buy them at the nursery. The good news is that this fungus will only affect the snapdragons and nothing else. Eventually, it will kill your snapdragons (as it did mine). I have been told that the best way to avoid this pathogen is to grow your snapdragons from seed and hope for the best that the funus is not present in your soil. I was lucky in the sense that I had the snapdragons growing in a container on my porch, so it was relatively easy to eradicate it from my garden. Good luck-SirSedum
