Sunflower help

Oakley, CA

I planted three sunflower seeds (can't remember the type, tall ones with one flower) and only one survived, it's strong and healthy, but there's no flower yet. The thing is about 4 feet tall and I figured it would have a little flower by now. is there a problem, am i doing something wrong, or will it bloom later?

Hi Desperado, it looks to me right in the center of the plant, a flowerhead is emerging from the plant, give it a stake in beside it as these normally have very large heavy flowerheads and can be snapped off, also give it a feed, prob best with a liquid tomatoe feed or something like that at this stage to give it some neutrients to help make the flower colour up and fill out. good luck, Weenel.

Thank you

Hi Desperado,

I have about a dozen giant sunflowers that I planted that are various heights right now, ranging from about 4-8 feet. None of them have flowers yet (though I think they're coming, like yours). I think it's just a little too early still, as I really haven't begun to see wild sunflowers come into bloom yet. Hang on there, I'm sure they'll be marvelous soon!

Ditto...I have two in my garden that haven't bloomed yet. One's maybe 5 1/2 ft and one's probably 7 ft. Unfortunately, I'm a shy over 5 foot tall, so I'm not sure if they're getting ready to bloom or not ;)

I'm glad to hear someone else has varying heights on their giant sunflowers. I thought they'd all grow in sync with each other. Guess not!

Yeah, that's what I thought too....they're close to each other and recieve thee same of everything....but one is way taller than the other....Oh well...

Nope sunflowers can grow to be a real variety of hights and in the right conditions I suppose these flowers can have some real tower power! A house down the street from me has shoots that are as tall as her front porch a good 8 ft or so. They should also reseed very easy too, most times I've ever grown sunflower it has been from what has dropped out of the bird feeder!

Well, today while watering, I noticed that the shorter sunflower is a but uphill from the bigger one. I know I've seen them respond very quickly to being watered, so I wonder if the one that is so big is because its gettting run off from the other one?

i've got little ones that bloomed a couple weeks ago and some are blooming now.
I've got wild ones by the road that are huge they're getting ready to flower, but i do think they bloom whenever they feel like it without regard to variety or whatnot.

mines about 6 1/2 ft. tall now and opening. (the picture)

there's a few ants on it though, will they harm it?

I had some 'teddy bear' sunflowers growing and something ate the tops off of them when they were real little, any ideas what ate 'em and can the plants come back?

are you talking about the flowers?

flower buds i should say

Squirrels run up my sunflowers and snap the tops all the time. They usually will come back and eat the seeds out of the head that they leave on the ground. Sometimes they make off with the whole head when they break it off.

Len is right, those are flower buds... no plucking! ;-)
