Hi. I live in Eastern Shore of Md. I've grown string beans for last 7 yrs, no problem. But we recently moved 6 miles & now something is "cutting" my string bean vines :( It actually looks like someone took scissors & cut straight across. Had them on poles like always have, but took down today-figured they might have a better chance? Help please? Any ideas on what kind of animal or bug is doing/can do that? Next door neighbor is having problems w/rabbits eating his string beans but he has big garden, all rabbits are over his house, none in our yard (plus have dog that chases them away). No string beans have produced yet, other than vines being cut, plants are growing beautifully.
Help w/String Beans
A rabbit cut does look like they have scissors. S o I would bet on them since they are already in the neigbors yard. They can work around a dog.
Have you ever made Leather Britches? That's taking a needle and runing string through the beans and hanging them to dry, rather than canning them. After drying, when it comes time to cook them, you soak them overnight and cook them just like regular green beans. Delicious.
Easier than canning.
Yup, in eastern Kentucky they call them shuck beans. They are good but a different taste than fresh or frozen beans. Sort of like the difference between fresh apple and dried apple pies. each is good in its own right.
I grew up in Eastern KY and these beans were called either shuckie beans or leather britches. When my friends have used this method, they say the beans taste like straw. Then I tell them they haven't cooked them long enough, plus they have to be seasoned with hamhock, etc.
