Hi Dave,Is there anyway...

Marlton, NJ

Yes I certainly would not want it to be in large letters or bold like the time is, just something very small.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Just a suggestion here - on a tumor website that I read and sometimes participate in, each poster ends with their name, type of tumor, location, dates, surgeries, treatments, etc. Like this...

yada, yada, yada
Laura
Future MIL? to xxxxxx, ependy L2-L5, 100% resected 03-06, no radiation, no deficits.

It's really helpful to others to remember who's who and what they are dealing with. In the same way, if those who would like to see who's using what equipment, list it on every post you make in the photo and/or camera forums and before you know it, others will join in and do the same.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Nope. Not interested. I love all the photos but I don't need to know the specs. I visit 4 or 5 different forums on a daily basis and only occassionally will someone start asking about the type of camera. So I'm curious which forum(s) keep asking for this info. For my part, when the response comes in about "what camera did you use for that shot?" it's usually a professional photographer with high-end equipment that I would never buy using settings I would never understand.

If it were me, and I had that big a problem with *that much* typing, I would just create the blurb in Word or Notepad place a shortcut on my desktop, then copy the blurb to the clipboard when starting to post pics. This way you can just paste away to your heart's content in each post. Ctrl+V = paste. My 2 pennies.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

I really can't even begin to say how many times I've been asked about my camera (on probably every forum I'm involved in except maybe the prayer forum) - and while I'm certainly glad to help any DG member out with information, it would be nice it if were listed. I know sometimes DGers are hesitant to ask, too, for fear of being annoying so it would be a big help on both sides. And let's face it, this site wouldn't exist (as it is anyway) without photos.

Thanks for considering this, Dave.

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

If the placement is in an appropriate location, it's a grand idea because I am one to wonder about the cameras, etc. but keeping the screen uncluttered, and definitely not flashing, is superior to that.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Personally, I like the uncluttered look and would prefer to be able to find camera info on the member's page. I do find myself asking members what camera they use.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We provide a member page where you can add whatever information you'd like about yourself. Here's how to update/modify your information:

1) Click on "My Info"

2) Click on "Manage your preferences"

3) Click on "Member Page" (link is on the left)

4) Add your camera information (or whatever defines "you" ;o), in the area where you can add a paragraph of content about yourself.

5) Hit Submit when you're done.

Marlton, NJ

Thanks Terry, Thats a good idea. The only problem I see with that is its a long explanation to the question and a 2 step process for the person wanting the info.

Anyway, as was said earlier I appreciate your considering this. Pelle

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Pelle -- yes, but once you have set it up, if someone asks for the information, you can just say "see my Member page."

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

As Pelletory said, Dave & Terry, thanks for considering the request. I will just continue to give the information if asked, as referring them to my member page takes almost as long and feels a bit rude to me.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I don't mean to prolong this discussion, but it does seem to me that if you put the information on your Member's page, at least some people might see it there and not ask you, saving you the time. And those people who do ask you for the information might, in the future, check the Member's page when they have that same question of other members. Just a thought.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Good point, Happy_macomb!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

If this information was displayed as sidebar information, the steps to add it would be pretty much the same length as what I outlined above ;o)

Just food for thought? I have people asking me all the time ... what sorts of flower/vegetables do you like to grow? After all this is a gardening site. I have that info listed on my "member page" ... but since it's something that's near and dear to me, I certainly don't mine anyone asking. I have it written down and use the copy and paste method. :) It works nicely if you find it tiresome to type it in each time. However, I find that I get excited when folks like to talk about what I enjoy. :-)

Sorry Terry ... we cross posted. :-)

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I was going to make the same suggestion as ecrane the other day, but decided against it because I probably wouldn't use the feature myself...but it seems like there is enough interest and it probably wouldn't give a cluttered look to allow a short phrase of limited characters that would display just below our location. One person might choose to identify their camera, while another might give a favorite quote. The only problem I see with that, is perhaps it would require some administration to ensure that nothing posted is contrary to the rules of the website.

I also think the option of having a configurable copyright is a good one. Instead of 3 set choices, allow members to choose their own copyright phrase to display on all their pictures.

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

I just tuned in to this post and would like to chime in with a vote for camera info in the signature area. It sounds like its a no-go at this point but wanted to throw my vote in the ring anyway. :-)

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

I do find it interesting that the majority of the proponents of this camera information have never contributed a single photo where it counts, Bugfiles or Plantsfiles.

Marlton, NJ

Bugs- I might have an old photo of a Praying Mantis but I try to stay away from bugs as
I'm always getting bitten.

Plants- I have a lot of old Daylilie pics but because I can't really garden theres not
much I have to offer.

If you ever start a Bird File I'd be happy to contribute to that.

A question for Dave - would it be possible to have a signature file available to insert at the end of posts at will? This way if someone is posting a photo, they can include the sig file with their camera info. On photo intensive forums, such as the Bird Watching, this info is often requested and it would be much easier for the poster to include it.

Kathleen

Kathleen,

I'd really rather not clutter forums with signatures and things like that. I see them on almost every other forum out there and I think they are distracting and tasteless.

The need to communicate information like this should be done on your My Info page - that's what it's there for.

I agree. I like the clean look of DG and I like reading rather than being inundated with images. The photos retain their impact this way, too. Just considering all the options.

What other forums? ;-)

Marlton, NJ

I agree also. A lot of smaller forums have the signature boxes below the post where you can put almost anything in; a fancy signature, butterflies etc. I guess they think it makes things look more personable but to me anyway it looks too gaudy.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Actually, I rarely go to other forums, except for tech support, etc., and they are usually pretty plain. All this stuff people are talking about is unfamiliar to me - though I do know about it . I use mail lists instead, which are usually in text-only format. Lots of folks have text signatures with little faces or, in the case of genealogy, a short list of what surnames they are researching. I sometimes use one or the other, but nothing over the top and definitely nothing that flashes or moves.

I've been looking at things on a lot of other forums lately as part of something I'm doing at work, and I have to say all the stuff that you see on a lot of these other sites is highly annoying. The moving, flashing stuff, etc is definitely horrible, but honestly I don't even like the informational signature lines--a lot of these sites it's hard to tell what's part of their message and what's part of the signature and in my mind it makes it confusing as you're trying to follow a discussion thread. I'd much rather just click on the member's name if I'm interested in knowing more about them and find the info there.

Marlton, NJ

Well my thought would be that the size could be slightly larger than the post#'s but not as big as any other words in that box.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Liz, not to belabor the issue, but when used properly, signatures can be very useful. A lot of my lists have restrictions on the number of lines, or content. And when you're viewing a list archive, you usually don't have the option to click on the person's name.

For DG, I agree clicking on the person's name is useful (and I'm glad to be reminded of it) and will be much easier when Dave gets the pop-ups operating.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

To be clear, I'd be OK with having other info if it's in small font in the box on the side underneath our name, I was responding to what pelletory had mentioned about other sites that put personal/signature info underneath the posts, that is very confusing and I don't like it at all

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

I'd rather not have signatures. and please, please no blinkies!
