we could possibly get another space or 2 in the signature box so we could include what camera and perhaps lens we're using to take our photos with? Thank You.
Hi Dave,Is there anyway...
bump :-)
Signature box? What am I missing? Do we have a new toy on DG? :D
Yes, please enlighten us. What signature box?
Did some one mention Box ?
Heads up Guys .
The one that has your name and location everytime you post.
Oh, thanks. I don't think the info about your camera and lens would go in that box. You could, however, put it into your "Member Page."
Why not just put it on your " MY INFO " ?
Put it with " Photo From pelletory "
Then all ppl have to do is click on your name .
You could always include it in your post like some DG members do, too. Best would be to put it on your DG member page.
Thanks for the replies. I was kind of hoping it could just be upfront somewhere because people are still going to ask what camera are you using.
You don't think the words "Nikon D80" would fit in the signature box?
Maybe forget about lens info because that would be too much. Thanks. :-)
This really isn't a primarily a photography site. I could see having that info if it were, but there is a lot of info in there already which takes up space. Just put it right in your post so people can see up front what you were using for a shot. :)
I hate to start a new thread when what I'd like is similar to this request. How about....a picture / icon (can't remember the techie word for it) that would appear under our user name every time we post? That would add "color" to the threads. My website I use for beadmaking does it...called LampworkEtc.
This has been tossed around several times through the years. Dave's kept the forums very clean-looking, using few graphics other than thumbnails of thread photos. I kind of like that after being bombarded by everything from still avatars to animated gif's on other forums. If avatars were added to DG, I'd want the ability to turn them off.
Ah yes....avatar. I need to look up that word and see what it meant before 'puters! :-)
Gardenwife, I totally agree that one should have the "turn off" ability, as the little moving things, blinking eyes, etc. really get on one's nerves after awhile. I so glad you brought that up....would have to have that capability. Perhaps we could just have a personal picture or picture of a flower...our garden....no moving/flashing, etc? Is that possible?
That's up to Dave, Trish and the other admins. Might be nice to help remember names/faces or interests.
That's what I was thinking...would help some of the "older brains" to keep everything straight! :) Does Dave or Trish read the threads here personally? Or do the "Uber gardeners" send them alerts when things are worthy of their time?
This is the forum they definitely read, the go-to place if you have a site issue or request. :)
Then how come their not replying??
Never mind, I withdraw my request.
They've got a lot on their plates. Be patient. :)
I often like to allow a conversation to go back and forth a bit before I jump in with my own opinions...
....spoken like a wise executive....thanks for listening! :-)
I think the idea of having a small picture or something is nice...but I worry about the people who are stuck with dialup connections, will threads take forever to load if every person has a little picture under their name?
Hadn't thought of that.....and that's one for the computer guys to answer for sure.
That would be a lot of images to load per page, yes. On broadband, no big issue, but I remember being on dial-up and having to turn avatars off on forums that loaded slowly.
I have been to forums with those things, so much clutter it is hard to find the actual conversations. I like the nice clean look of DG.
Well getting back to the original question. Would that at all be possible? Obviously not everyone would not want their camera info displayed and thats fine but having that option would be nice if possible. Thanks.
Avatars- I would personally not like to see that. I think it makes for such a cluttered look and daves is a smart looking website. Another site I've been to has avatars and some even are in motion so you get the pleasure(wink wink) of seeing someone doing the Twist over and over again or another doing splits in the air etc. I like the nice clean look we have here.
Agreed. Clutter is very distracting. And it is disconcerting to have a lot of superfluous information. If you have something to say I don't care what you look like. If you have a great picture of a plant that I am interested in I don't care how many bells and whistles your camera has.
I'm of the same mind, clean is good.
I agree about the faces Farmer. About cameras; I was not talking about bells and whistles of the camera, just the camera name. That could not be anymore distracting then your or my post having the city & state. Thats just words.
True, but unless you are endorsing a particular camera manufacturer, what difference does it make if it is a digitised picture from an old Kodax Brownie or the latest Cannon? The photo should speak for itself.
I think the biggest drawback to it is that not everyone has a camera, or cares what camera others have. (Gasp....I know - that's heresy to our photo hounds ;o)
We could make the argument that pet lovers would like to see the type(s) or name(s) of their pet(s) displayed below their name. I'd be equally gun-shy of that idea, and for the same reason.
Ditto for people's favorite hobby or author or plant or ... well, just about anything. We're such a wonderfully diverse group, with diverse talents and interests - it would be really hard to try to add a snippet of information in this area that would meet everyone's needs. (And it's a slippery slope when you start with just one great-sounding idea ;o)
And please, oh please - no bouncing gifs, avatars, etc. I get motion sickness watching them.
I think if DG were a photography site like treklens.com, it would make sense to have camera specs in a personalized area. But this site is largely a gardening and home improvements site, with great photos being an appreciated, but minor, focus. Just as we put the name of a plant pictured, we can put the camera used to take the picture. I guess I don't see the big deal about it since this isn't a camera or photography website.
Terry, we posted at the same time. Ditto to what you said - much better than I did! :)

Minor Focus?? Are you kidding? What would this site be like without all the wonderful photos? Way too sterile.
Anyway the reason I asked is because the question (What camera are you using?) is being asked all the time and people always have to repeat the information.
As far as slippery slopes go; as long as there is administration then that shouldn't be a problem.
Okay...I see your point about avatars.
I hearby withdraw my request. :-)
I'll admit that it's not serene when all the "wink-wink's" and gyrations are going on. I was just thinking it would make the threads where no pictures are able to be entered as more "colorful."
I was thinking everyone who chose could enter, say...a rose if that's your thang....or a lily, or whatever. Or your own face, if that would make someone happy. But I definitely see that I'm outnumbered, so I'll shut up! :-)
Pelletory, perhaps you could save your camera info in your computer clipboard so that you can quickly paste it into your posts with photos. I also thought that putting your camera info on your member page would help. When people are curious, they'll click on your page. That might not eliminate the requests you receive, but it might reduce them.
I have no doubts that nearly everyone enjoys the photos on this site, but I also agree that most people aren't concerned with the type of camera and lens used. Except, maybe for folks in the photo forum.
I'd also like to post my appreciation for the DG administration. I think nobody does it better.

Pelletory, I so agree with you. I would love to see what camera people used by each photo. I occasionally will ask but not as often as I wonder. I think it would be so interesting to see if a particular camera consistently took great pictures regardless of the user. But I do not think we will get the option. Oh well.....................
Just include it in the posts, no biggie. Dave could, I reckon, extract the camera's model from the photo's EXIF info, but that's only if the EXIF info was saved with the photo. I strip it from mine sometimes to limit file size.
It's not just me I'm talking about, it's many others. To write it down every single time would be a pain. Lets give this a little time to get different peoples opinions on this one.
I like the idea of putting it on people's member page, that way people can find out the info if they want. My concern with putting it in the signature box is that if we do it for cameras, there are other people who are going to want other things there and then we're going to end up with lots of cluttered stuff everywhere (or make everyone but the camera people mad when we can't include their info that they want).
One option I can think of and I don't know if this is possible, would be to include it in the copyright watermark that goes on the photo itself--maybe there could be an option where you enter your camera info somewhere in your member page, then you can choose to use a watermark that includes the camera info along with your name, etc.
Or the other option is give people an option to put 1 "extra" piece of text up to a certain number of characters in their signature box, and they can make that text be whatever they want (as long as it follows the site rules of course!) That way you could put your camera info, or you could use it for something else. If the number of characters are limited and the font size is kept smaller than the other info, I don't think that would create too much of a cluttered look.
