Hello All,
I am moving and want to take my giant elephant ear with me. It has been in the gound since spring of 2006. I don't want to leave it, but I also don't want to kill it. :(
Any advise would be appriciated.
Thanks,
Sarah
Moving & Need to Transplant
Just dig it up and keep it moist and in the shade. You might want to give it shade until it becomes re-established. If it's healthy it should be pretty hard to kill. Take all the roots that you can. Good luck.
Agree with the above, once you dig it up, place it into a large enough pot with some nice fresh compost and give it a liquide feed, keep it shaded till you see it has perked up and also water as the soil in the pot will dry faster than when it was in the ground. dont know where you are going when you move, but if cooler, it may loose it's leaves in the winter, so stick a label in the pot so you remember what it is. Good Luck, and best wishes with you move. WeeNel.
If your elephant ears begin to droop, I would cut off several of the leaves a few inches from the base so it can channel it's energy into keeping it's root alive rather that the leaves. It will put on new leaves after it has recovered from transplant shock. Hope everything goes smoothly with your move.
