Viburnum

(Zone 7a)

I have a question about my Arrowwood Viburnum. The branch on the right is hanging fairly close to the ground. If I push it down and ground layer it, will it propagate itself? Does anyone know if this will work? I know it works on my Blue Mist!!!

I would think it would. To give an extra push, I would nick the part that is going to touch the ground. (I use a potato peeler to make a nick) Then sprinkle some rootone on it. In your picture the long branch that is almost touching on the right seems to be of hardwood already. I would try that spot but would also nick and touch down a piece of the softer tip branches that are on the end of that same branch.

Good Luck,

Thanks, Chris, I'll do that.

Hi Kwanjin, the advise from Chris is correct, but to keep the branch that you want to root safe, secure and under the soil, you will need to add a wire pin, make it from an old wire coat hanger, looks like a large ladies hair pin, and make it long enough to go well into the earth, if this dont secure it, lay a stone on top of the bit of branch that is under the soil, if you dont secure it, the branch will move about and all you will get is desease as the branch moves about, also the top of the branch needs to be loosely tied to a stake so that it grows upright while the roots grow (maybe a year) you dont need the cane that you us as a stake to be upright, it can slope, so long as it helps to keep the top growth straight till it is cut free from the parent plant. this is how a lot of amatures root plants and is usually safer for them. good luck, WeeNel.

Thanks WeeNel and Chris. I'll do those things and in a year or so I'll post the results. I appreciate the help from all of you who have answered this and future questions. Celia
