A friend of mine has about a 5-foot Schefflera which she inherited. She wants to know why some of the leaves are turning pale. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Schefflera with pale green leaves
Hi Kristi .... I don't know what could be the problem with your friend's plant, it might be lacking in some nutrient or other. Does she ever fertilize it? Maybe too much fertilizer is the problem? Is it getting enough light? The Scheff's require a lot of light. I have huge ones growing in my back yard .... taller than the house. They of course get a lot of full sun every day. Here's the link to Plant Files ... not sure if that will tell you anything that will help. Hopefully someone will come along soon with some good advice for your friend. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/37035/
If they're just turning pale but the plant's not wilting or anything then my guess is it needs fertilizer. If the leaves are getting pale yellowish and falling off or the plant looks a little wilted/droopy then it could be she's watering it too much.
Also check to see if the leaves are dusty. The leaves have to breathe and will begin to fall off if they are too dusty. If it's small enough, she can put it in her shower and gently wash it there. If it's very large, take it outside and use a gentle spray on the water hose to wash it but don't sit it in the sun to dry afterward as this will cause the leaves to be burned.
