MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Jo! I have been wanting to meet you for just as long!!! Gosh I haven't talked to Susie in ages! Sure miss her around here. Well there are only a few people who actually call me Jody, most just call me "Jo" ;) Our new property is only about 1 1/2 hrs or so from the botanical gardens, should be "doable" :)

Sorry that I haven't gotten back to you Bellie! I have a whole slew of dmail to answer. I just haven't been online much recently. Just kind of been in a fog, LOL.

Hugs to you ladies!

Crozet, VA

I live in Crozet VA. It is about 15 miles west of Charlottesvile and The University of Virginia. It is about a three and a half or four hour drive for me to be in the Hampton Roads area. I love it there and have been visiting since I was a wee little one. That makes it almost 50 years that I have been going that direction.

For a few years, I got side tracked and visited The Outer Banks of North Carolina, but past few beach trips have been VA Beach. I just love the ocean, where ever it is.

I am sincerely going to try and come to this round up, but am like some others who are having medical issues. I will have to see how I am feeling on the 30th. It is good to know that a group is meeting up though and if not this time, it will next time.

You all have a grat day.

Ruby

Crossville, TN

Jody...looking forward to seeing you....
Ruby....I hope your health issues are so that you can come....keeping you in my prayers! Jo/Jody/Betty Jo/....OK and DINKY!! LOL

Crozet, VA

Thank you and all for any prayers. I need them, that is for sure.

Ruby

Poquoson, VA(Zone 8a)

Jo, to answer your question, I live in Poquoson, which you probably know is right near Hampton/Langley AFB/NASA. For those of you not familiar with the town, it's pronounced "po-KO-sun" (really). It's a Native American name meaning (depending on who's telling the story), either "thick woods" or "big swamp". Judging from the size and ferocity of the mosquitoes (we hear them calling the tower at Langley AFB for permission to land), I must conclude that it means "big swamp".

Bonnie

Crossville, TN

Thanks, Bonnie....My cousin's family lives in that area...and Matthews...He is deceased. Jo

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Good one Bonnie!
They are bad over here too. Although I will have to say they have not been to bad so far this year. I guess because of lack of rain. Gotta take the good w/ the bad I guess

Crozet, VA

Hi Everyone. Sami, I am hoping to get some hibiscus seed from you. The yellow sounds lovely. I have a white one. How do you go about getting the seed and saving it. I think I tried last year, but cannot find the seeds this year. I would like to know your process for gathering and then storing them. Thanks in advance.

I hope that everyone is having a good day and are staying cool. This heat if awful !!!

My hibiscus have the pods that dry up after the flower blooms and they are lots of seeds in the pods. I will take a picture of mine this weekend and will show you what it looks like. My have got to be about 6 feet tall.

Sami

Poquoson, VA(Zone 8a)

Pdoyle, you are right, they have not been as bad this year. I haven't even seen many dragonflies either, and theyre were gazillions of them last year, eating the mosquitoes, thank heaven. I think, as you said, it's probably the dry weather - no pools for them to breed. Hey, that must be the silver lining.... So my grass looks like straw - at least I can go outside without getting carried off by the "Poquoson Air Force".

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

Bonnie, I went kayaking a lot over there a few years back and if we didn't get off the water before sundown, they sure would come and try and carry you off, lol! We'll probably go out that area this weekend if the weather cools off some.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Well it looks like I want be able to make the roundup in Raliegh. My hubby works that weekend and he cant trade because he has something for the next weekend. I might still think about driving there on my own if my sister-in-law is not out of town. I think it is about four and a half hours from me here in Corapeake, NC. Will just have to wait and see.

Sami

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

My DH surprised me by taking me to the NBG today. Had I known we were going, I would have #1 worn my tennis shoes (flyer says 12 miles of paths) #2 I would have brought my sunglasses (beautiful sunny day) & #3 I WOULD HAVE BROUGHT MY CAMERA!!!!!! Oh well, he did good. I must say it was beautiful. A lot of things had already bloomed (it is August) but there was a lot of things still going. Even if nothing was blooming it is still a sight to see. There is a tram that leaves every 30 mins and will take your around. You can get off or get on at these designated spots. I can not wait to go again. My DH's idea of looking is not mine. I wanted to stop and read just about every lable I saw. I will have to say I was delighted to go - camera or not.

That is a wonderful report. Good going for the hubby too. He done good. Good to know about comfortable shoes. Glad that you had a good time.

Ruby

Crossville, TN

Yipee.....That tram is for me....

Bellie...since you are going to try to come for the day with us...how about we go back to the original plan to have our plant swap at the NBG? I have learned that the parking lot of the Buffet is in a very busy area and nowhere to really have a comfy trade time.

I understand that just inside the gates of NBG there is a parking lot....with shade....and a picnic area....no need to bring tables for our swap there..

Whatdaya think? Jo

Virginia Beach, VA

I am waiting for an email from Jody if I am cancelling my golf game. Yes the parking lot is busy but Thursdays are not bad. i will let you know as soon as I hear from Jody. Thank you, Bellie

Virginia Beach, VA

So How many is going to this gathering? We all can park at the back where the stores are. There are plenty of spaces there. I have a white mini van and I will email my cell. See you and I can not join you for thr tour. Bellie

Bonnie...I wish you could come too. Jo

Virginia Beach, VA

Yesterday was my first visit to Dave's Garden and I am really impressed. There are so many of you out there. You seem to have something like a "club" going and that is great. I wish I could join you on the 30th but I'm afraid my 15 month old granddaughter coming to see her Nannie from Florida at noon that day is the winner. Haven't seen her or our daughter since May and I'm excited. Have a great time. If you haven't visited the Gardens lately, you will love it. Our daughter, the one coming in from Florida on Thurs., was married there, It was such a beautiful place for a wedding.

Wow, what a great post. Welcome aboard hollie. So glad that you could join DG. I have only been here a bit over a year and have found it to definitely be my favorite websites to visit. I haven't been able to believe the open heartedness that I have found among this group of people. The members of DG are just about the most giving people that I have ever met.

I was privileged to meet a group of DG members in June when a member hosted a Plant Swap at her home. Oh yeah, wanted to mention that I used to spend most of my DG time on the Mid Atlantic Gardeners forum and would love to have some of you Virginians (and others) come on over to that forum and introduce yourselves. They too have a Plant Swap scheduled for September 8 in Frederick Maryland. I will probably not attend that one, but do want to visit others in the future.

To the ladies here who so graciously invited me to attend the Swap/Botanical Garden Tour this week , I am going to have to decline the offer. It is not going to work for me this week. I have had a lot going on here, medical-wise and don't feel that a car trip will help matters. Please remember to include me later on if you guys decide to do something such as this again. I would certainly love to get to know some of you folks better and have some new names to add to my growing list of friends.

Hollie, I am new grandma too. My little Emily is 3 months old today. It has been several weeks since I have seen her, and I am having withdrawals. I need to schedule a meal with her parents later this week so that I can spend some time with her. August has been a very busy month for me.

Again, welcome and here is to those getting together having a great time!!! Please come back and update those of us who will be unable to attend. Happy Day All!!!

Hi Jo - You are up early, or late, whatever the case may be. Have a good week my dear and so sorry that I will meeting you this week. Take care and travel safely.

Ruby

Crossville, TN

Ruby....I am suffering with a summer cold....and have to leave for the airport this morning some time......my DD and her DH will be flying as far as Chicago with me....then they will change for Nashville and I will go to Norfolk......we will meet up again for the family reunion on Sunday in WV.

Ruby...I am so sorry you won't get to come...but I understand! Prayers to you. Jo

Crozet, VA

Thank you so much for the nice note Jo. Have a safe and fun trip. Darius spoke very highly of you. If you decide to come this direction again, maybe we will be able to meet then. You all please report in after the tour and let us know how it went.

Ruby

P.S. to Sami - Thank you so very much for offering me a place to stay overnight. That was very thoughtful and kind of you. Maybe, another time. Ya'll have fun!!!

Virginia Beach, VA

We ate at Uptown for lunch and I tried to get the room but they said it is for boigger parties so we will just stay in the dining room. Pretty big place so there are lots of tables. Bellie

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

Jo, since you seem to be the early "ringleader", can you confirm I read this whole long thread right?

Arrive 1100 to 1130...Lunch 1130? Swap after lunch, then to Norfolk Botanical Garden?

You posted a link to the lunch spot...thanks!

Don't forget your McDonald Garden Center customer cards for 2 for the price of 1 entrance.

Thanks Ruby for such a nice comment. My problem is figuring how to get around this thing. I knew I suffered from computer illiteracy but I new knew it was this bad. Are there directions or instructions for all this stuff? I feel very elated. I actually found this site without going back to Jo's welcome e-mail where she gave me the hyperlink. I'm getting there slowly but surely. Bonnie

Crozet, VA

Oh Boy!!! You are asking the wrong person, if you are asking me about navigating your way around here. I know a little, but certainly not all that some of the folks who have been here longer know. As for finding your way back to a place, on the top of the page there is a place to click on in order to "watch thread." This will bring the thread to your Dave's Garden home page each time that someone posts a message.

There are over two hundred different forums here and each forum has many, many threads (individual topics.) I suppose that as you read different things of interest to you, you can go to top of page and mark to "watch thread."

Basically, just keep coming back and asking questions and folks will try to help you get around. This is a wonderful website full of lots of goodies. If the answer can't be found here, people will guide you elsewhere. Almost every thing garden related you should be able to find here though.

Good luck, and welcome. I hope that we can help you make your experience here a very good one.

Ruby

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Welcome, Holliehocks! Not to worry, you'll find your way around in no time. A good place to start is by clicking the "Communities" tab at the top of the page and then clicking on "Discussion Forums." That will take you to a huge list of forums, organized under headings such as "General Gardening" and "Leisurely Pursuits." Don't be intimidated by the number of options, just click on anything that looks interesting. When you find a forum that especially appeals to you, you can "add it to your favorites" by clicking that option at the top of the forum page -- and now it will appear on your home page (favorite forums with most recent activity will be at the top of the list). Have fun!

Crossville, TN
