TIDEWATER AREA SWAP

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

No Jo their not vines.

Crossville, TN

Thanks! I've already killed one of the vines this year....LOL SHHH don't tell Fish-knees...actually I smothered them....planted Tithonia with them and the Tithonia took over. Jo

Crozet, VA

Ya'll have room for another person? or two? I hadn't been very faithful about reading the Mid Atlantic Forum for a while, and decided that I would do it today. So very happy that I did and found this. Sounds like great fun to me. If all of my medical issues are under control by then, I will be there with bells on my toes. ha-ha

It will be good for me to meet some of you folks who are in the same state as me. The tidewater area is one of my favorite places too. I haven't ever been to the Botanical Gardens and am looking forward to that.

I will have live plants that day and when I walk around and make a list of things that I have to offer, I will post here. Will be so much fun. I also have a plant swap on September 8 in Frederick Maryland if any of you are interested in that.

I hope that everyone will have a great week. Take care.

Thanks for the map, I'm not all that familiar with eating places on that side of the water!

I'm in, not sure what I'll bring, but for sure there will be hostas, and some hibiscus I grew from seed given to me by a friend. I have seedling hostas too though they are just babies and nothing special...just green!

I may have another couple of things, but we'll see!

Now to block my calendar for a DAY OFF! woo hoo!
Laura

My pleasure!! See ya soon. Jo

It will be nice to see you again Laura and I wish I can be with all of you all day but I have agolf game with a league at 3:04 which means I have to be at the club at 2:30. Bellie

Chesapeake, VA

Count me in too, if there's still room. I don't have much to offer--some salvia "lady in red" seeds, red and pink. This salvia is unstoppable, and the hummers love it. I may also bring some small (and I mean small) fennel plants which I grow for the butterfly larvae. See you all on the 30th.
Judy

Crossville, TN

Judy.....there's always room for more!! Glad you can make it....Jo

Chesapeake, VA

Thanks, everyone is so friendly. I have some Agastache's, and some hollyhocks, too. See you then.

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

THis will be fun. I am ashamed to say I have lived here most of my life and have never been to the NBG. I say every year I'm going to see azalea's in spring but never make. I'm looking forward ot it.
Jo, your a doll for doing this!

Crossville, TN

*blushing*...Shucks....I just love meeting other Dave's Gardeners....They are such wonderful people. Jo

Crozet, VA

The more, the merrier. Yep, it is looking like a good group. I have several sedums that I can share. I am over run with Sedum Autumn Joy. Is there anyone who would like to have some lariope?

I will have marigold seed, dianthus seed, columbine seed, lupine pods, celosia seed. I will have to look through seeds to see if there are others that I can bring. These are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

I have one other plant to share, but need to go and research the name. Will do another post with its name.

Judy, I would like to swap something for some salvia. I love it, but haven't tried growing it.

LaviniaMae wishes to extend an invitation to all who would like to come down to Raleigh on Sept. 8....and take part in her RU....should be a good one.

There can't be too many DG RU's! LOL

Jo,

This is my first post to a forum, it's a good thing you mentioned it in your e-mail, because I would not have thought to come over here and add it. As I said in my e-mail, I'm new to DG and pretty much to gardening in general as I just retired last November, so I don't have a lot to offer in the way of plants yet. I've got a lot of the ice plant with the fuscia colored flower, scads of elephant ears, and a couple of nice "not so common" bushes - but I don't know how to take a cutting that would keep through the day.

I look forward to meeting everyone and getting more involved with other gardeners.

I am excited to meet everyone!!! If any of you has some black plastic planters, (the ones that the plants came from) I would like some. Actually some throws rthem away but I need it for my fall hosta divsions. thank you in advance. Bellie

Crossville, TN

You know....I failed to mention that....Spouses are quite welcome too!! That's up to you. I am a widow so I will be alone....

Also, I called the Uptown Buffet....we had a wee little communication problem....but I think I got through to him (Ruben) that we would like to use the back of his parking lot for our swap...he thought we were going to sell something!

I also asked if he had a small room we could have our lunch in....he said yes....but I'll call him again a couple of days before we get there. Jo

Virginia Beach, VA

We go there often and they know me. The small back room is nice but they put in 18 % food tax because it is considered a party and has to be prepaid. I do not know it it got changed. I used to reserve the room often when i was working. Food is excellent!! Bellie

Crossville, TN

Thanks for the info Bellie...maybe we'll just eat "with the commoners" LOL Jo

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

Does anyone know if the "Blue Glory" vine, which is a blue version of the black eyed susan vine, puts out seeds that are true to the parent? Mine are blooming up a storm, but I don't know if it's worth trying to keep seeds for sharing or planting next year.

Laura

Virginia Beach, VA

No idea!!! bellie

Laura...Nothing ventured...nothing gained....not my bright saying though....But I would be glad to give them a try. Jo

Poquoson, VA(Zone 8a)

AWWWW RATS! I can't make it. We're leaving for Charlotte the next day, and we both have to get haircuts that on the 30th. Also I have a meeting that I can't miss. Grrr. Seeing all these wonderful DG'ers right here in Hampton Roads, I am so disappointed! Let's do something like this again, soon, huh?

Love to all,

Bonnie

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I would love to come but I work that day... All have fun...
Susan

Crozet, VA

Of course this particular day will be so much fun that we will have to schedule another get together soon. I am not 100% sure that I will be able to come, but knowing that it is going on is good to keep in mind. I have a lot of medical stuff going on this month and will have to wait and see how I am doing.

It is really good to know that there is a good size group of you you there. Your area is one of my very favorites. I visit as often as I can. It only took a lady who lives across the United States to nudge us in the side to do this. Thanks Roadrunner, you are the coolest babe!!!

You all have a great week.

Ruby

Crossville, TN

Ruby.....and I think you are SPECIAL too....come on down....Jo

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

Now if I can only find out what the seed pods look like, lol! I went out this morning to look and could not find any...anyone have pics of them on that vine or the regular black-eyed susan vine?

I'm hoping if I mulch them they may come back next spring.

Laura

Crossville, TN

After the MG blooms there should be lots of little dried up "bell" looking balls on the vine....just catch them before they open and scatter their seeds. They will probably self seed for next year....but you don't need ALL of them....so catch some to trade. LOL Jo

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

roadrunner,
Thanks for the invite! I would really like to attend but am having some medical issues and dont think I could stand on my feet long enough to take a tour of the Bot Gard.

I use to work in Norfolk and Uptown Buffet was a regular lunch time chow spot. I know you will enjoy it! Have a great time and take lots of pics to post!. Maybe I can make it next time.
Joyce

Poquoson, VA(Zone 8a)

Joyce, maybe we can host one on our side of the HRBT, sometime, now that we know there are all these DG'ers here in Hampton Roads!

Bonnie

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

NanuBunny,
That sounds like a plan!!!!!
I have only been here for about three years and would be happy to meet some folks close by. Once I'm done with this round of doctors and testing (and possible surgery) I would be glad to do a round up. Let me know .
Joyce

Crossville, TN

Joyce...why not do like Bellieg....join us for lunch and a plant swap....and forgo the tour....we'd love to meet as many as we can. Jo

YEP! I have been known to have a "good idea" once in a while...especially when I am trying to get DG folks together. Jo

Couple of thoughts on the Botanical Gardens. I went this spring with a friend and we walked ALL day. I was so sore the day after, but we had a nice time. The temps were decent that day. Bring a hat, some sunscreen, and your camera.

First, if anyone else has a McDonald Garden Center customer loyalty "Green Rewards" card, the card gets you two for one prices at several local museums, including the Botanical Garden. If we double up on membership cards, we get in half price. The garden also offers a dollar or so off for military, seniors, and possibly others.

Second for those who don't have the stamina for several hours of walking, there is a tram that goes around the garden, such that if you just want to go enjoy a couple of the gardens and ride around to see more, you can do just that and not spend quite as much time on your feet and still enjoy the day if it is not too hot. Couple this with a "half price" ticket, and a short visit for an hour is more is doable and not too expensive.

You can download a map on their website and look it over. The rose garden is next to the main pavilion, and the Japanese Garden is right behind it. The rose garden has an overlook from which you can see a pair of nesting Bald Eagles if they are still on the nest. There is also a perennial garden a short distance from the entrance. Bottom line is that you can do a short loop in an hour or an hour and a half, stopping at a bench or two if needed, and not kill yourself. The boat ride, for those interested, lasts about 45 minutes and costs an extra $4 per person and they recommend reservations for groups.

Laura....Thank you so much for the info....now I know I can do TRAM!! and BOAT!!

I go to my Chripractor/acupuncturist 3 times a week for my bad feet...and I am so short of breath that I don't do that much walking....but I'm glad to hear about the tram. Jo

Hey everyone looking forward to seeing some of Dave's Garden members. I went to the Botonical Gardens in May and took my client and he took the electric wheelchair because he can't walk much either so maybe the ones that have problems can do that. Not sure how many they have.

Would anyone be interesting in some Hybiscus seeds. They are yellow and just beautiful. Also have some gourds I grew if anyone is interested in them. don't have very many but will bring some if anyone wants one. I have not been in my place very long so dont have much. I also have ice plants mine are pink. Might be able to get some Fatsia plants between now and then.

Sami

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

I think I might be able to go to the Raleigh roundup. My sister-in-law lives there but have to make sure she is going to be home and that my hubby is off that weekend. Will let you know in a few days.

Sami

Crossville, TN

Sami....I hope you can do the Raliegh area RU....poor Shoe...he can't go as he does Farmer's Market on Saturdays....Jo
