mushrooms in the garden; a sign of what?

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi there,
I have mushrooms popping up all over the garden. The are off white with no stem, almost round, and really hard to pull out.
Why are they there, is it a bad thing and if yes, how do I treat this?
thank you,
Christie

Are they "puff balls"?....I think most of the time fungi is just a good sign of plenty of mulch....and some moisture. There are some that come up from dead tree roots but that does not fit that description :)

We get lots and lots of mushrooms here, on the lawn and in the woods. Most of them are helping to break down dead wood and other buried vegetable matter, which will improve the soil, so I don't bother to pull them up. They don't last long, in any case. Unless you have a very good ID on the mushroom, don't try to eat it as there are some that look like the edible ones but are poisonous. I did have the courage to try eating a Giant Puffball one time - sliced and fried in butter, it smelled lovely while cooking but had little taste.

I have several different types of fungus/mushrooms coming up in my yard...some quite large. Last year I crawled around and gathered up a couple of buckets worth of them so I could dispose of them. I had heard that some types are fatal to dogs (both of my neighbors have big dogs.), and I was afraid that they would just multiply. They are just beginning to show up now. What's the best thing to do?

We have a Ferns, Fungi, and Mosses Forum! You could post some pics on the forum, and ask the Fungi enthusiasts to tell you whether or not your mushrooms look like poisonous ones.

Great idea! Thanks
