Dahlias

Corvallis, OR

I planted 5 Dahlias tubers and only 2 came up but with no bloom yet. I now realize I planted them on the wrong side of my yard with only partial sun. Should I pull all of them up and replant or just the three that did not come up?

Dahlias are tubers so you cant just pull them up or you will break the tuber up, the best thing to do is to dig a new planting hole where you want to place them, add lots of new compost and a general feed to the mixture, and dig a wide hole around the tubers, remembering that the tubers have prob grown outwards as they swell up, then when you lift them, take as much soil as you can to the new planting position, you may need to stake them if they have a good bit of growth (foliage) to support them till they get going again, some of my Dahlias are just in bud now and others have started to flower, these are late season flowerers and should last well into the start of Autumn if you deadhead the dying flowers as they fade, they like sun, but also lots of water and food as they need the tubers to stay firm and plump, at the end of the season, you can lift and dry the tubers off and next spring, set them in a box with (JUST ABOUT damp compost) and as you see new shoots appear, cut this off with a bit of the tuber and you will grow a whole new plant. But this year as you lift the 3 tubers to replant, just check that nothing has eaten or no desease has got to the tubers as there are lots of things that like to eat them, slugs for a start, fungus can be a killer if the plants were not dried off properly before you got them, so when I lift mine I always dust the tubers with a powder called sulpher, you get it at the garden stores and it helps to see them through the storeage stage especially if we had a really wet autumn. hope this helps.
