July 21st Blooms

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Okay, so no real downside, except $ and back pain. That's what I was hoping you'd say! What a jawdropper that LW is.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well I DON'T look forward to getting in there and dividing it! It is located deep in my lily forest and will be difficult to get to without stepping on other lilies:-( And I am sure the clay soil is hard as a rock; it always gets that way when untilled for a few years.

I believe Black Beauty is considerably more recurved and the pollen is much darker, and according to the registry BB is taller than BR at maturity.

I can't remember if anyone posted 'Imp' or not. I thought it was cute and am looking forward to next years blooms.

This is my first ever speciosum rubrum. Very excited about it. We went to the botanic garden last night, where we saw mass plantings of Black Beauties, which were breathtaking. May have to go back in the next few days to get a picture. Also saw groupings of some of the orienpets that have been appearing in the threads here -- Leslie Woodriff, Scheherezade, (sorry if I misspelled; typing fast), Silk Road, etc., and they're so much more beautiful in person, as most of you know, of course. This is the first year I've had lilies, except for a few ordinary ones left over from previous owners, or even taken much note of them. Actually, since my garden's mostly shady, I'd talked myself into believing that foliage alone was enough. And it's great, for sure -- I still love my foliage plants. But now with these lilies it seems every day is spring, waiting for some new rare beauty to start opening up, and I only have a few compared to you collectors.

By the way, the botanic garden had some beautiful groupings of White Henryi, and now I'm in love with him, and I have to have him.

wickerparker, that sure is a beauty!
Does it curl back (recurve) more as it ages? My speciosum sucumbed to something a year or two ago and I need to get it replaced, I thought mine was darker and more recurved than yours is. If I remember correctly Blk Bty is the result of a cross between Sp. rubrum and henryi.

I really need to go do something in the yard before work. It rained this morning so I might try mowing the yard!

Just a little teaser before I go: 'Dimples'

Ililyfan & Others- Just went through all the pictures - Sooo beautiful. Please keep posting - just love to look at them.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Lilyfan -- those are lovely. I don't know about the speciosum, as it just opened this morning, and it's my first year growing it. It looks like it's recurved a tiny tiny bit since the photo, but I think it stays fairly open. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong. It does look a shade lighter in the photo than in person, I think. I sure am looking forward to the white ones opening. Instead of mowing, couldn't you go around taking more pictures for us?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I have noticed that the structure of many of these lilies takes a good 24 hours after the blossom opens. Does anyone else find that to be true? I never noticed until I started archiving mine this year. After 24 hours, it can have a whole different form. So I am thinking, the recurving will come, wickerparker.

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

mags & wicker,

yes, I have noticed that the recurving usuallytakes a day or so to be fully achieved. I didn't know how old the flower was when the pic was taken. I really did have to mow before going to work, but I think I might find 1 or 2 more pictures to share :-)

This is 'Ambrosia' who is a 1c that looks alot like 'Doeskin'

Oh Ticker I'm so sorry, I can feel your agony!

Let's see what we can find to soothe the pain.

Does 'Dark Star' help at all?

Oh yeah, that's nice. ;) It would help a lot more if it was in my garden. :) LOL Seriously, it's very nice. I haven't seen anything that anyone has posted that I didn't like and instantly want. :) I need to behave. Keep them coming Lilyfan! :)

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

I'll see if I can find one more bandaid for your owie. Oh by the way, I have the same affliction, if I see it and don't have it I want it!! That is what the Faraway flower thread is doing to me!

'Peach Elf' I think this is actually a pixie, no matter she's cute.

Sue, finally got a chance to view your lily pics. WOW! now , where is my poaching shovel when I need it....

I want to plant more of the late bulbs. My l. rubrum is just blowing me away. I walk right past my spiders (daylilies) and stare at the huge blooms. Sorry. Pics on home computer--not here!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Stealing web time from work time..................you naughty girl you! Guess being the boss has some advantages LOL

I need more later blooming lilies AND daylilies, but most definately the late lilium. I need to replace my L. speciosum rubrum. My Louise is starting to finsh up now and has been spectacular this wierd year. Black Beauty and Scheherazade are also on their last blooms.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Sigh. So much to do and so little time. Got to get my act cleaned up here, help daughter choose car & pack for 2 week trip. HELP! Oh, add my favorite cousin from South Dakota will be meeting with my whole family at my house tommorrow night. Dirty house & garden needs deadheading. Such is my life this summer...

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Wanda,
Where will the two week trip take you?

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Bill will be riding Harley as I drive daughter Amanda's car down to her in South Carolina. We will take a day here and ther to ride in the Mountains on the way down thru North Carolina and Tennesee. After we drop the car at the NAVY Goose Creek training center, we will head up thru the Carolinas, West Verigina, Virgina etc. Bill is planning it all out. Dodging summer storms, I hope. I suppose we will hit lots of Harley Davidson dealers so my hubby can get state shirts. Like he doesn't already have enough!!!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

What fun! Have a safe trip. Are you taking us along like you did last year? That was fun.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

We are taking a laptop--I'll have to see if I can steal it away from my hubby long enough to post pics!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Great!
