Sweet William Dianthus"sooty"
Plants labelled Sweet William Dianthus are usually biennial, which means they will probably die after flowering. If you leave the flowers on the plants, you may get some seed. Seedling plants that grow from now until fall will overwinter and flower next year. If you save the seed and sow it next spring, those seedlings will not flower until the following year. However, if the bees that pollinated your plants had previously visited other varieties of Sweet William, you will get some variation in flower color.
I didn't post the question but wanted to say thanks for the great information June_Ontario! I had not been interested in growing Sweet William until this year when I saw mixed colors planted in a grouping. It was gorgeous!
