Can anybody tell me a little about heliconias? I had never seen or heard of them before until some showed up at my local nursery this week. I fell in love with it--had to have it. Absolutely gorgeous. I just don't know what to do with it. I think I have the "Parrot's Beak" variety. Any suggestions?
Heliconia advice
Hi Lanasland, dont know if I am talking about the same plant, but we grow on called the parrots bill(Clianthus Puniceus) it is a climber though and if it is the same plant, it grows like Formosa, if it is the climbing one, then grow on a support as it spreads out rather than up, but has wonderful bright red flowers that look like parrots claws or bills, the other type can grow in a hanging basket as only lasts for one season and is just as lovely, but it needs a sandy soil and watered from below, as in put the pot into a bucket of water till it soaks up the water as if you water from the top of the pot, it will rot the stems and die. hope I am on the right track, if not, then maybe someone else will come in and help you out. WeeNel.
Doesnt say much in the files but it may help a little.

Thanks for my two replies so far! WeeNel, the climber that you describe sounds lovely, and I might look into getting one if I can find it, but my plant looks more like a canna lily. lcf530's link was helpful. I decided to wing it, however and stuck it in the ground along with my other plants, and hopefully it will do well. From what I read, it should like my hot, humid climate. So far, so good. If I can just keep my dog from digging it up...
