As you pull up my long drive way just as you get to my home you first encounter this creek rock lined flower bed along with some decor grasses. This bed used to be home to the prettiest all colored and type day lilies. Now there are nothing but yellow. I also have a few tulip bulbs in the bed also. I am really bored with the bed. I want something that will look good from spring through summer in it. I have become part of a garden tour and this bed is in real need. I don't want to spend a lot of time through the season with the bed. I have a much larger garden area that requires much of my time. I just need something great for entry way there. You know something that says your welcome to my home which is here to stay. Any ideas appreciated. This poor photo is now in the heat of July here in KY. As you see the bed is neglected. There is a long pot just sitting in the bed where my husband put it to get it out of the way. Help!!!!!!!!!!
Ideas for bed 10 x 12
Hi DonnaMW, these dont look like day lily's to me, these are more like ordinery lily's, they have obviously finished flowering for this season, the yellowing looks like lack of water, these types of lily's need the foliage to die down naturaly so the goodness from the greenery goes back into the bulbs and helps feed it flor flowering next year, if you live in a realy hot area, you could try growing some plants that suit these conditions like, Lavenders, Catnip (Nepeta) or Bougainvilleas, Geraniums etc, all these like fairly dry conditions, however, at some point, most plants need some water in the hot weather. Good luck. WeeNel.
Thanks for the info. The plants are needing water. I have really let this bed go this year. I live in Western KY. and it really isn't that hot here until July. Really humid though! So these are just plain lilies, Ha? They were the only plants here when I moved here. Why did they all go yellow? Another pic of my gardens to view.
Very nice! I love it!
Robin
thanks
Hi DonnaMW, the rest of your garden looks great, so how come you have a problem with the bed out front, why not follow the same theme as the rest, and go for semi tropical things like you already know, the liliy's are prob going yellow as they die down, this is natural for lily's, the foliage dies back into the bulbs and this feeds the bulb giving energy for next years flowering, they prob also need a good watering to help the bulb stay plunp and desease free, this is when I always give mine a feed and a good soak as they are building up the little bulbills that they produce as they die down to make even more plants for you, why not at the end of the season or come spring, add some plants that will withstand the dry conditions of this bed, things like Lavender or Catmint that will spread over the soil but also add some extra colour, the catmint will spread out, I dont mean it makes new plants, it spreads in size, it has a wonderful blue haze of flowers and attracts bees and buterflies, smells good too, a Good one is six hills giant< then when you see the effect that gives, you can also next season add some more colour as you go along. hope this is of some help to you, good luck WeeNel.
Did someone spray roundup around the stone planter in the first picture? It looks like the grass is dead around it too. It wouldn't do the lilies any good, maybe overspray?
