E-mail etiquette

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Mine has a spell check on DG.............I often try to catch those misspelled words. The problem is I type in running sentences and thoughts with no punctuation.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

gessiegail, how do I access the spell checker when typing messages in DG?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think the spellchecker is a browser function, not a DG function. If I remember right, Firefox comes with a spellchecker and there's one you can download for IE. If you scroll down through the threads on this forum (or do a search and limit it to this forum) there was a thread about it a few months ago that would tell you how to find it.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I use Firefox but I don't know how to download it (it is free). The computer tech downloaded it for me. I open up with Firefox and the opening page is Yahoo. (I only use Yahoo for opening to receive the New York Times Select on email address)

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

It may be in the settings you have, or perhaps the spell checker is
a newer version of Firefox; which I use.

As you type, if the program thinks you have made a spelling error, it
will underline the word in red. When you right click on the word, alternative
suggestions are posted, which you may click on to instantly correct
your error.

I pride myself on spelling correctly, but once in a while a word will pop
up in red, such as Wuvie, which the program obviously does not recognize.
It is helpful at times when you aren't sure. It is fun for me to figure out the
proper spelling instead of using the tool, though. Testing myself, so to speak.

:-)

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

OIC - thanks for the info.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

My inability to spell comes from nothing but lack of memory and old age...............doesn't interest me to try and spell on my own as I don't really care whether i can remember to spell as long as I have a spell check, it works for me......................

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Mary, you are most welcome.

:-)

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I put google toolbar up and it has a spell ck. It is easy. I should just use it more.

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

One that works for IE is http://www.iespell.com/download.php

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

you are soooooooooooo helpful, Hyblaean, for those that don't have spell check.

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Sue, I just had to tell you I'm ROFLMBO after clicking on that photo! What a fun non sequitur!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

critter, I had to go back to see what you were talking about. (dial up, so I had skipped it)
I am still laughing. Not everyone would see humor in something so bizzar. But I do.
Sue, I loved that one.

Ok here it goes ,one finger and a knuckle lol. First I would like to say is Wuvie you crack me up ,your so funny.
I again apologize for not responding earlier due to illness ,I could have cleared up a few matters quickly. I am not nor ever will be an expert on E-mail or posting grammar or etiquette ,if I came across like that I am sorry.
I had received what I thought was a D-mail of questionable content ,I have over these past years received many D-mail questions, inqueries and comments and look forward to receiving and answering them all. That same day I had seen a report on CNN on how we as a whole use, and unwittingly at times misuse this convenience we all now have at our finger tips.As well under the "Home talk tab" if you click F.A.Q. is a very similar explanation under use of capitals.
I wished to just remind people ,including myself to be at times cautious,I have as well on occasions hit that old send button and then had second thoughts.Gessiegail I hope I have not offended you ,I am not a finger wagger nor a know it all ,I have trouble taking my own advise let alone giving it.This was the first time I have made such a posting in a forum.
I hope that at least it has created a means for discussion and I have not offended anyone .And yes Sue was correct.
I would like to close by saying I deeply enjoy DG and the people I have met ,corresponded with and friendships made over the years and look forward to many more.

P.S. Wuvie rocks lol. (That took 25 mins to type ouch!)

Daryl

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Sue, that is very fitting. LOL
Daryl, hope you can add another knuckle to the works soon...meaning...hope you are better soon.

vernon, BC(Zone 6a)

Lol thanks :)

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Daryl, you are a good one finger & knuckle typing man. A most excellent post there!

FYI, I have often reported errors and admin. has written back to me that they encourage users to try to get a dialog started to clear the errors up and when all are in agreement, contacting admin to make the necessary changes.

lol Wuvie.. regarding your first post...
My friend dialed a wrong number. She apologized and said she had the wrong number. The woman at the other end said 'to get it right' and hung up. So my friend figured out what number she misdialed and called back! She told that lady she was rude and hung up. That woman then called us! And told my friend that she was rude for misdialing in the first place. And I heard 'You're rude... no, you're rude!' for a moment before my friend hung up again. lol

Just saw the bunny! OMG!!! Just what I needed this evening, as someone started a flame war on a mail list today and it was horrible. Thank you, Sue!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Wuvie, I'll take brownies and ice cream.

C-Sue, After that I'll have a little pancake....that is, if Thumper is through with it.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

daryl, I didn't think you were being a know it all. I just thought that you were trying to help spread the word that etiquette is as important on a forum as it is in our daily lives.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It's sometimes hard to bite you tongue when someone ticks you off, I guess. But then I always say if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything...in this instance it would be "type" anything.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am sooooooooooo sorry I ticked you all off!! (LOL)
I do tend to type just as I talk which is comprised of running sentences..................no apologies need for this running second sentence.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

g-gail, you are trying to steal my thunder......

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

this is the weirdest thread I have gotten in on!!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes I know what is being said and other times, I just read and let my mouth fall open.............have a great day!!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Gessie,

If I misinterpret your post, I apologize, but are you upset? You do
realize we are having fun in this thread and that no one is angry,
don't you? :-)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

g-gail, My above comment translates: I totally agree with you and you just said it first.

daryl, Thanks for your follow-up. I didn't mean for you to interrupt your healing to answer my (nosey) question!

Central FL, FL(Zone 9b)

What's a flame war?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It's a disagreement that gets out of hand, generally with personal insults ("Only a #($&@ idiot would do that!") "Yeah? Well, your mama... !"). Definitely not the civil tone everyone tries to maintain (and admin insists on) here.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

critter, do you really garden? (LOL)
I don't get around to many forums on Dave's but I rarely get on one that you aren't on, too...........we want to see your pictures of all your african violets..............the uploading in plant files is getting easier.............

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I garden more and post less when I'm not having migraines! :-) But trust me, there are so many forums here that there are plenty that I'm never on at all. So you can get away from me if you try, LOL!

(sorry for going O/T, folks!)

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL Critter,

I often wonder about the people who begin flame wars. When I
read a flame post by someone, I often think they only have
such bravado when behind a computer screen.

When I was a moderator on another board, we would often ask the members
to consider "Would you act that way or say that in person?"

Puts a whole new spin on things when people are accountable
for their behavior.

:-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That's a good way to put it. Sometimes I think people are feeling frustrated about something, and their aggression gets misdirected. So another good question (which I've seen used on DG threads when somebody starts sounding testy) is, "Why are you angry with me?"

I've known some people who are belligerent in their online postings... and they're that way in real life, too. With them, it's just a habitual way of communicating. That's not the kind of huge chip I'd want to haul around on my shoulder!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, isn't that the truth? Just the other day that is what I was thinking,
about the chip on the shoulder thing. Some people just want to feel
negative, want to spread the negative. What a way to live.

I say jeez, be happy now and then. Smile. Eat cheese! Break wind, let it
all out for a therapist, do something!

LOL :-)
