I love Russian Sage but don't have any in my own garden so no experience with it. I inherited a public garden to tend that has gorgeous Russian Sage but it has rather taken over an area and I would like to move some of it to another part of the garden.
Know can divide most things but are some exceptions and wasn't sure on this one.
Can I divide it and if so when is best time to do this? Also any "how to" tips would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Can Russian Sage Be Divided?
Hi,
Yes, Russian Sage can be divided, but not now while it is blooming. Wait until it dies back a little bit and then divide, or wait until Spring. 3 years ago, I made the unfortunate mistake of dividing while it was in bloom and I lost a lot of them the following year. You can divide it the same way you divide other plants by tearing it with your hands, using a hand spade or splitting with a shovel for larger plants. Good luck.
lafko06-Thanks ever so much for your advice and sharing your experiences! Spring is my favorite time to divide things as usually easier then, and the divisions have plenty of time to reestablish.
Love your discription on dividing methods. I have used all of them at various times. Have also used sharp knife and a hatchet for some really tough ones and worked great:-)
