oh no, I used Preen!!

Avon, IN(Zone 5a)

Ok, we bought our house last fall it had no flowers... so this spring we were busy busy w/ all the gardening. My parents have always used preen in their flower beds and suggested we do the same in ours to have less weeding.... I didn't know better and took their suggestion, remember i'm a newbie gardener.... well now I have realized the ramifications of this and am worried that my black eyed susans and coneflowers and others that reseed will not come back? Should I collect seeds and winter sow for seedlings?

Does anyone know if that stuff only works for 1 season or am I in forever doom? Grrr... I like the fave we've had very few weeds but surely I won't do this again!

The stuff doesn't last forever, I'd take a look at the label and see what it says about how long it stays good for, I don't think it could possibly last more than one season though so you're definitely not doomed forever. My guess is if you applied it in the spring, and you have plants dropping seeds on the ground in late summer-fall the effect probably will have worn off and they'll be able to germinate, but if the label says something about lasting a whole year or something like that then it might not hurt to save some seeds.

I think if you cultivate the soil it will stop it from working, as it creates a gas layer over the soil which is how it kills the seeds. I'd just collect the seeds and start them next year. May as well enjoy a weed free garden!
