Hi Lorraine,
Can't say for sure, but it looks like some sort of croton. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/715/

It IS a croton! I'll have to refer to my books this evening to find the exact name of it! Amazingly, it is a very popular house plant up here, so this is the first time I've ever seen it growing outside! Susan

Wow that's beautiful. I wonder if it would survive outdoors over here? Is it deciduous or evergreen?

Its tropical. It won't stand a freeze. Bummer, eh?

What a shame - it's always nice to see a 'new' plant - but tropical the Northwest of England isn't so there's no point planting it here!

Hi Buddleja,

As Junctioncats indicated, these are popular houseplants. You might want to try one indoors, although to be honest, I've never had luck with them indoors. They do require high humidity, which is hard to maintain during the winter months when indoor air is usually dry due to central heating. However, it might do well in a terrarium.

I just noticed that you are in zone 8. Why not plant one outside in a pot and bring it indoors during your cool months. You don't have to have one as large as the one shown in the photo. When used as indoor plants, they are quite a bit smaller. They also come in a variety of beautiful colors.

I live in UK and these grow like weeds indoors, they are inclined to get a bit leggy so you need to keep pinching out the growing tips on the stems, dont over water and give the soil a bit of fine gravel to help with the drainage, they are really nice grown in a basket with some Busy Lizzies in cream or the bright red ones which makes a great Christmas display or those purple primroses we get in the garden centres in Autumn, but even planted among all greenery house plants is very atractive too. good luck, WeeNel.

Sharon and WeeNel, I think I'll try it. It looks so nice with the cream veins in the leaves.
