Need Advice, New Sod

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

Is this the right place to get help with sodding a lawn? I'll try it.

I need to put sod down on an area that's approx. 300 sq. ft. This area has never had grass; it's heavily infested with weeds. I need to get rid of the weeds before sodding. I have to complete the project within 2 weeks.

I plan to sod with bahia. County laws don't allow me to put a lawn sprinkler in this area. Bahia is commonly used here in such areas.

I've read that one way to eliminate the weeds before sodding is to use a shovel to divide the area into squares, dig down a few inches, and simply turn over each square. It would be a big job, but considering that it's 300 sqare feet, I can do it.

Another option is to spray with a herbicide.

I don't want to use a tiller. I'd have to rent a truck, then rent the tiller, and I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

I plan on putting down a couple of inches of topsoil before I put the sod down.

Any suggestions?

I'd just mow them close down and spray roundup. Sod needs a lot of water to get established. perhaps you can get a variance from the county, they may even have an exception to the sprinkler rule for establishing sod.

They do have an exception for new grass. I can water more than the mandatory once a week, but I can't install a sprinkler system there. I'll water twice a day until the sod is firmly established.

I talked with a lawn guy, and he suggested exactly the same thing you're suggesting - zap it with Roundup. I'm going to pick some up today. Thanks for your input.
