Question about verbena...

Joplin, MO

I am growing verbena for the first time this year. It is doing very well, especially with all the rain we've had. The problem is they get long and spindly, kind of like petunias. Can you prune them back and how much? Will they bloom again? I have no idea what to do with them now.

are they annual or perrenial? annual will bloom more usually. i pinch off the spent flowerheads and cut back as needed - my annuals last year grew like crazy, and i definitely cut them back. they bloomed until late October (well, it was a warm fall).

here is a blurry pic from august of part of what grew from a single 3" potted annual i planted in may.

i am sure others can give you real advice - i just make it up as i go along...

I cut my mine just an nip tuck haircut after they first started blooming since they did get kinda spindly. Mine are purple Homestead, perrenials. But with the lack of water down south, they could do much better if the skies opened up more in NC. Thanks.

Thank you for the tips on verbena. This is Lanai Verbena from Springhill and I think it is perennial. I've been happy with it but they do get spindly. I went ahead and cut back the purple, so we'll see how they do. This is the pink. I also have red and peach. The rain has been a curse (floods) and a blessing all at the same time.
