Hi we put in sod Saturday night, it sat in the truck stacked up and it was warm ...all though we watered it. It was in the truck for a day so we have dead spots. I wanted to find out if anyone has suggestions on if this will come back and what special things to move it along.
Thanks in advance.
Sod
Hi Denise, the only thing I can think off is to go get another roll of grass and lift the brown bits and replace with the new roll, just cut off the dead bits and lay the new onto the space and you will see where to cut the patched in bit, you need to keep watering the new sod, I mean water, not just a splash over the top, the heat of the sun has dried all the roots and grass blades, so that short spell in the truck will give you an idea of how fast the roots dry out. I would do nothing more than that for now, then in a few weeks, maybe month, once you feel the roots have bedded down and got hold of the soil under the grass, you could prob give a feed as you water, but be extra carefull what feed you use, dont use one that has a weedkiller added as the grass is too new and tender for that kind of treatment yet, and dont add extra feed for good measure that will burn the roots, and the weather is too hot, everyone wants to feed the new grass, but believe me, at this time of the year, the grass has a hard enough time trying to get the roots down into the soil without having to cope with trying to grow at the spead of light because someone gave it a feed as well, hope this helps, really the best time for new grass is end of summer before the frost or spring before the hot sun, but for now, just work with what you have to do to help it along. Good luck. WeeNel.
Grass is very resilient, so don't worry about it. Just keep up with plenty of water, and in time you'll see it come back to a nice green. If it was totally fried, which I doubt, then you can patch it with pieces of sod later, but I bet you won't have to do that.
Thanks for the reply! The green part of our grass is doing good,,,,dead parts still dead but I wonder if it will overtake those areas. The brown squares if i pull lightly on them come up so no roots,,,this makes me think those pieces will def have to be re patched ... oh well thanks again! I added the latest progress pic...
Really sorry but at this time of the year, your grass, while rolled up into sod, will die much faster than you think, it was prob cut a few days before you got it and then was left in the truck in the heat for a while, if you look, it is the bits that were rolled to the top of the roll that have died, therefore the other bits were slightly more protected from the heat, I would returf the dead bits now so that later, you dont have a difference in grade/standard of grass come August/September etc, if the roots are still not rooting into the soil, you are allowing warm air to get into the next roll beside it, keep watering and if you have to returf the dead bits, give the soil a good watering before you lay the new bits, dont let the grass get too long befor you give it a LIGHT trim with the mower, Raise the blade up higher so you are just triming the tips off, it will help it to thicken as grass is a multi stemed plant and that is what you want to encourage it to do, if you let it get too tall, then cut too short, you will cut down to the tender root areas and it will dry out even faster, Good luck, WeeNel.
