I just installed a new pool and flagstone deck. I intend on boardering the deck with something to keep my St.Augustine lawn out from between the stones. Original plan was for Lirope but everyone in Baton Rouge seems to use Lirope so I feel its over used. Besides, I myself have three different varities in my own yard. So I would like to use something else. I have considered Ruellia, (mexican petunia,Dwarf varieity) but afraid it may become to tall and leggy. Dwaft lily of the nile also but I have no experice with that variety. Does anyone have another suggestion as to works good in zone 8B. I have also used Amerilus before but found it difficult to not damage it with the lawn mower.

Sugestions for boarders on my padio.
Lance, the dwarf Ruellia is not any taller the the liriope I have. The Ruellia will pop seeds and spread them over a distance. You may have more than you bargained for. The liriope would have been my choice as it can be trimmed easily in spring with a mower so it will put on fresh growth. On the other hand, I wonder if either would keep the St Augustine grass out. A low grower and delightful scent would be one of the creeping thymes perhaps?
Podster; Thanks for the insight. I looked for thyme in the nurseries around Baton Rouge with out any success. I at one time thought I would plant it between the stones. I ending up using pea gravel between them. Which I think is the safer choice due to the salt system in the pool. (afraid the salt will kill it) Anyway if I am able to locate creeping thyme, will it form a boarder if planted that way? I researched it in the Plant Files and was not able to determine if it will.
Actually, I am all wet, no I don't think it will create that great an actual border, just a ground cover. Got mentally sidetracked there ~ Sorry! But Lance, I wonder if there is any realistic block for St Augustine grass?
I'm not coming up with a darn thing for ideas - hope you'll keep us posted (with photos maybe?) on what you decide to do.
Liriope is looking more and more like the best solution. As far as stopping the St.Aug., I have found that it does a fairly sufficient job. While not completely stopping the St. Aug it slows it enough that small children and animals are not lost.:)
I have the next 6-7 weeks to make this decision as it is to hot to plant now, but from the looks of things so far, I may just have to accept it and conform to doing what everyone else has done. BLA!......maybe something non-orgainc, "large river stones or landscape timbers.
The original design calls for the use of recycled telephone poles to be used on the other side of the pool. (Standing on end 2-3 ft tall, pier style) I havent been able to locate any as of yet only used railroad ties. If anyone knows where I can get them I would appriciate that info. I have emailed a company in Houston but havent gotten a response.
Omigosh - that is wonderful! No wonder you want to find just the right border plant!
