Best non-growing ground cover to use. (re:wood chips)

La Grange, CA

I have some areas that are basically just rocky gravel. I would like to cover them with something, as well as scatter some potted flowers around. What is the best, least flammable, available, inexpensive. bark? redwood? wood chips? colored rock - lava? Thanks

Depends totally on what's available in your area. I got some shredded cypress mulch at WalMart for 1.66 for 2 cubic feet. But another Walmart in another part of town didn't have any. Go by cubic feet, keeping in mind that organic mulches will compress, degrade, and eventually need to be replaced. How big is this space, how much sun does it get, how level is (or isn't) it, and what do you eventually want do with it?

Rocks are definitely going to be the least flammable if that's a big concern for you but it's more expensive than wood mulch. I don't know where La Grange is, but around here the cheapest most widely available mulch is shredded bark mulch (I think redwood, but there may be others too), you can get it shredded more or less fine but the price is always about the same per cubic yd so go with what you like the look of better.
