Can I Plant Seeds In the Hot of Summer?

Riverton, UT(Zone 6a)

I love to plant seeds....Ive always done it in the fall or early spring. But can I do it in the middle of summer and will I get anything out of it. I am so impatient and really want to get a jump start for a fuller bed next year. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks everyone ...

I guess it would depend on what kind of seed you are sowing. With annuals, if you sow too late you might not get much bloom before winter arrives. Perennials and biennials, on the other hand, don't flower the first year and if sown now will still have time to make a decent sized plant that will over-winter and flower next year. Also, it may help to think about how the plant sows itself naturally: one that flowers in spring will seed itself in the warmth of early summer, while one that flowers in summer and seeds in the fall may need repeated freezing and thawing before seed germination.

Depends on how long your growing season is and what you are planting. I planted 3 different types of datura and castor beans late last summer (late August). They all germinated but did not bloom. I took them all indoors where the castor plants did bloom and set some seed. The datura never bloomed and finally croaked (best to plant them in the ground). Look at the seed pack and see how long it takes to bloom / set fruit and work from there.
