Brown patch fungus in my lawn

Yarmouth Port, MA

We have a one-year-old hydroseeded lawn in sandy acid soil in Massachusetts. Because of this, we fertllized like crazy this spring, and got wonderful lush grass for about one month. Then, we started to get a patch of dark-green purplish grass that quickly turned brown. It started small, grew to about 5 feet, and now the whole front lawn looks ratty and brown. We dug up a patch (no grubs) and took it to our local garden center. The garden guy says it's brown patch fungus, caused by a particularly humid spring here on Cape Cod, and the fact that we probably overfertilized. We've spread a fungicide and are crossing our fingers. I've heard that lawns can come back from this, but our lawn is pretty young. Should we keep reapplying fungicide? Has anyone had any (positive) experience with brown patch fungus?

Hi Mary, have never had your problem with brown fungus so wont give advice as the wrong advice can be worce than none at all, what I will say is that as you covered your grass with a fungiside, nothing will happen over night, these things take some time to get to work, however, if you still have the container that the fungiside you used came in, then read the directions for dosage, it should tell you if or when to re-aply, too often will burn your grass and perhaps kill the roots also, so always go by the manufactors directions as they are like scientists who make up the recepe for the right aplication, how and when to use it and what imprvements you may expect, maybe somewhere in this info you will find a web site/phone number and they should be able to help you or answer some questions about their product, maybe another quick answer may come of you can phone your local golf club and speak with the green keeper, they work with mainly grass and might give you a faster answer, it's worth a try. Good luck anyway, WeeNel.

I don't know anything about brown patch fungus, but WeeNel is right, read the directions and don't apply more fungicide than the directions say, or do it more often than they tell you, too much of it isn't going to be good for your grass either.

I haven't had any positive experience with it.LOL It should recover fairly well. Yes it likes humid conditions and fertile grass. If you are able to apply a systemic fungicide then a few more applications wouldn't be bad. Also only water that grass in the morning.
