June 25, 2007 — Israeli researchers say they have genetically engineered tomatoes to give hints of lemon and rose aromas that have done well in testing . . .
Hmmm ..
* Lemon, Rose-Flavored Tomato Developed
Something the matter with a mater smellin' & tastin' like a mater!?!
* have half as much lycopene as conventional tomatoes
Thought we wanted lycopene!
* offsetting the low levels of lycopene, are higher levels of compounds called volatile terpenoids, thus have longer shelf-life
There's something about words that have 'oid' in them that tend to cause a bit of concern. Besides, I guess all retailer tomatoes should be able to endure that week or two +, time 'in transit'!
Ahhh, perhaps it's one of those 'acquired' tastes ..
Wait a minute, I think I can smell it already .. but, my taste buds sure haint accumulatin' any drool yet! .. lol ..
Makes for somewhat of a good read tho' .. http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2007/06/25/tomato_hea.html?category=health&guid=20070625110000&dcitc=w19-506-ak-0004

More genetic 'tinkering': ohh yummy!!
Well, that was interesting. I love a good home grown rinsed off myself after plucking tomato. Unfortunately, the squirrels/birds get to mine before I ever get them off the vine. :-( But I remember vividly that homegrown flavor of Gran's tomatoes.
Thanks for sharing that story Mags. I'm with you. I don't much trust anything with an oid in it's name.
Janet
Lemon and rose and tomatoe flavours all rolled into one package. ... sounds fruity to me.....
Janet ..
There aint, & taint nuthin'll ever be, like a good ol homegrown mater!
Yep, wgnkiwi .. you're right! .. heehee
Ya know .. it seems more like sumthin' we'd stick into a vase, or those dresser drawer fragrances .. or a breath freshener you'd chew. (Hah! That 'chew' part, jes may ring truer than we think!) .. lol

How would you like one with just a hint of Basil?
raisedbedbob ..
Now that would be some of the most logical genetic engineering to attempt. I mean, who wouldn't luv a naturally Italian flavored 'mater!
I'd be a heck of a lot more inclined to give it a trial run - than that other thing! .. hee
Uhh, do ya happen to be workin' on something similar, yourself -?-
- Magpye
No, Magpye. Working too hard trying to retire in August. Maybe later LOL
My own G(arden)E(xperiment) trial consists of planting basil at the base of each tomatoe plant. Said to improve the flavour of the maters. LOL
Sounds like an endeavor with some value .. wgnkiwi !!
raisedbedbob ..
Allow me to relay some early congratulations to you! I'll bet you've already got big plans in the making, on how to spend those few extra hours per day, 'ey?!? (I use the term, 'few' extra hours .. because I jes don't think you're one of those folks that allow too much idle time to flap in the wind. (heehee) My best to you ..

Magpye, you're a trip (I mean that in the kindest of terms). We're building a house down in VA which is occupying a lot of our spare time - not a lot of time left over for intensive gardening. Alas, this too shall pass. Our land is 2.6 acres on the Mattaponi River. here's what the river looks like.

Congratulations Raisedbedbob, we did the exact same as you 15 years ago
on the West Coast of Scotland, been a real load of hard work, but believe me, it is worth all the blood sweat and tears, my husband and I can never work out how we managed to go to work for a company as we dont have enough hours in the day, but the real pleasure is, the day is our own to decide what we want to do with it, we set little projects for spring, summer and autumn etc, and if we manage, great, if we dont, it is work in progress and gets done eventually, the prob for us is that we live on the ocean and are constantly entertaining visitors, but they never arrive with work clothes, need to set out new rule book Ha, Ha, Ha, all the best and Good luck. WeeNel.
